Feather Dress on a Bridge

November 9, 2011

I decided to try to make better use of this dress, but it’s a difficult piece because the cotton voile is such a summery fabric. It’s also a one-shoulder, so the line isn’t good under a sweater and I think it looks kind of odd across the chest. It’s a favorite dress though, so I’m continually looking for new ways to wear it. I think a cropped jacket would work, although I don’t have any right now.

Packing is so time consuming! I’ve hardly been doing anything else and surviving mainly on coffee. Hopefully things will settle soon.

Autumn Colors

November 11, 2011

I took these photos last week. It’s been pouring here and terribly gloomy. But! I got new boots! After unsuccessfully trying on about ever pair in DSW, I ordered these Born ones from Zappos. They’re very comfortable and fit all my specifications except for the calf size. I’m hoping they don’t loosen up any more or else I’ll have to have them taken in. I haven’t had Born shoes in years and I forgot how well-made they are.

Sometimes funny things happen to me when I’m taking photos. Like a tree branch smacking me in the face.

Did give me the inspiration for the first photo though.

Velvet and Bows

October 3, 2011

Another monochromatic look for your perusal. This is clearly not today, because today was a balmy 72 earlier in the afternoon. When I wore this it didn’t even break 60 and I wanted so badly to not wear tights that I got out my over the knee boots.

I was just admiring the pretty leaves on Caitlin’s blog Re-Mix-Her. We don’t have any yet, probably because it’s been so warm. That’s nice but the leaves are falling without changing colors! Hopefully I can get to Central Park when they’ve turned and are not yet all over the ground. I think I have to actually request a permit too, so if anyone else wants their outfit photos done in Central Park I’ll take them. Might as well get use out of the permit and dragging the tripod around.

I’m attending a TJX event tomorrow at the store on 6th Ave. Lydia will be there too. Let me know if you’re going!

How To Take Nonchalant Outfit Photos

Last week, Mia told me she likes my facing-away from the camera photos. So this week I give you Three Easy Poses for Not Facing the Camera:

(1) Your basic stand there and ponder the shrubbery. Resist the urge to turn around! Actually ponder the shrubbery if it helps. And remember to relax and drop your shoulders.

(2) The angle. Position yourself at a slight angle with one shoulder closer to the camera. Good for close up photos of backs of dresses, shirts, etc. and of handbags.

(3) The sideways walking shot with a twist– instead of looking at the camera look down or look over the shoulder farthest from the camera. Don’t actually walk anywhere or your image may be out of focus. Just pretend.

If you try a pose from my silly little guide let me know!

I’m wearing my T by Alexander Wang jacket from the sample sale, LOFT belt, I forget who makes the dress, Coach bag (vintage), and MIA ankle boots (DSW.com).

Something Old, Something New

I noticed recently on The Clothes Horse that Rebecca has been carrying her vintage black Coach bag. I’ve been looking for a black bag… and then I remembered that I have the Station bag, too. While it won’t go with all of my outfits, I’m enjoying its classic style.

The Station bag is one of the classic styles available on the Coach Classics page (how are you supposed to bookmark with the pop up layout?), but I’m sure it would be easy to find on Etsy as well. I’m also a fan of the Court bag. Too bad most Coach stores don’t carry the classics, I’d like to see it in person.

This is a new skirt! I got it at the Alexander Wang sample sale, and I bought the matching jacket too. It’s a casual fabric, so basically I have a little suit that sort of feels like loungewear. Both jacket and skirt are from the T line but I did get a dress from the flagship line. It’s very similar to the dress I already have. What can I say, I’m a creature of habit.

Least Brilliant Idea. Ever.

Guys.  Guys.  On Saturday I decided that since it was not raining for the first time in my (admittedly short when concerning the weather) memory, I should go out for an adventure.  To Waterside.  It did seem like a brilliant idea at the time.

And then I got there… and I realized why no one else was about.  The wind.  Crazy.

And I only got one semi-normal looking photo.  My hair.  It’s… I don’t even know where it is.

On the plus side, the park was mostly empty which significantly cut down on the what-is-that-crazy-doing looks.  And I had a lovely (windy) walk.

But I might have to brave the streets next time.  Tall buildings totally cut down on wind, right?

I Think It’s The Shoes

20 Feb 2011

So I don’t totally love this outfit…  I think it’s the shoes.  I expected them to blend in with the navy tights (worn with the help of Spanx) a little bit more, but… they didn’t.  I should have probably dug up some brown sandals or something, no matter if they would have been slightly ridiculous with snow still on the ground.

I wore this to go do some general running around.  And then I just suddenly happened to be in the Coach store.  I did receive a really good discount from them in the mail ($100 off $300 or more) so I just wanted to look around and see the spring collection.  They pressure you a lot to buy things though, and that really makes me not want to go to the store.  I was also so surprised that no one in the store could recognize a vintage Coach bag.  I guess Coach has changed a lot since I was younger and they’ve done a lot of rebranding.  I think they’re losing touch with their classic look… which makes me sad.

Change in seasons has been wreaking havoc with my sinuses so I have such dark undereye circles now, I didn’t walk into a wall or something.  But I’m enjoying the clear sidewalks for the first time in a long time and I hope you are too!

Grown Up Gossip Girl

7 Feb 2010

Still working on postmarks with the actual date.  Sometime soon I hope!  I might have to buy some, I’m not talented enough with graphics to create my own/don’t have the patience to learn.

This was my original Gossip Girl look.  This dress reminds me a lot of early Gossip Girl actually, like season one early.  I love the design but the fabric tends to frustrate me because it wrinkles so easily– that’s a €15 dress, I suppose.  I have good memories attached to it though.  Shopping in Ireland!  I do wish I had gone to some of the vintage stores but I hadn’t yet realized how good and popular they are at the time that I visited.  Next time for sure!

Happy Monday, everyone!  I’m in Chelsea today if anyone’s around (i.e. let’s go drink coffee at 5 and call it happy hour).

Love,

Alex

Winter Outerwear: Snowstorm of the Week

Wednesday 26 Jan 2011

It snowed and snowed and snowed and snowed (as you can see)!  This is what a snow day looks like… when I’m actually going somewhere.  Otherwise I just sit around in velour and oversized Old Navy v-neck shirts.  I walked to the post office, then Staples, then Marshalls with my friend.  I actually had no errands, I just wanted to go to Marshalls to look at the tights (there were none).  I bought some organic dark chocolate covered candied ginger instead (it was good and I totally ate it all in one day).  I eat things with ginger a lot because it promotes good digestive health and I practically have no digestion.  I am particularly fond of ginger tea, both the fresh and overly sugary instant kind :)

So this is my absolute warmest coat, except for the legs, they just get to freeze.  I forgot about that when I wore it up to Marshalls, but I wanted the hood to keep from soaking my hair, you know?  I ended up BURNING UP in Marshalls.  I don’t wear this coat often because it’s strictly outdoor only, can’t run errands or grocery shop in it ever.  I used to wear it a lot when I was in school (had it since sophomore year of college) because I could just take it off inside and drag it around wherever I was going in the same building.  And no need to carry around an umbrella for the snow.  I definitely picked that habit up in Japan, do people do that here?  I do that all the time, or wrap a scarf around my head.  If I can save my hair I will definitely do it, by any means possible!

Love,

Alex

Some Old Things and One New

Tuesday 18 Jan 2011

Salutations!  I guess I’m just into the vintage look/old looking photo look right now.  Probably has something to do with me working on the blog layout a little more.  I thought it was loading too slowly so I made a few adjustments.  If anything crazy goes down with the CSS in the next couple don’t worry, I’ll fix it!

I got two new belts at the LOFT 40% off sale!  I love buying belts when they have huge sales like that.  This is one of them.  I intended to wear it with the LOFT safari dress (and with other things too of course) but the dress didn’t fit me at all.  Petites were too tight through the chest and shoulder and I ended up swimming in regular sizes.  Sigh.  I really like that dress.

I’ve fallen behind on posts again, which means I’ll be posting through the weekend, tomorrow as well.  If you’re not out playing in the snow (or sun, lucky things) pop by the blog tomorrow!

Love,

Alex
