Tiny Flowers for Spring

29 March 2011

I realized after I wore this that the ruffles of my dress made weird lines on the sweater… oops, the thicker knits I usually wear with this dress don’t show the ruffles.  After I took it off I also realized that the sweater has at least 8 holes.  Time to search for a replacement I guess (especially because I wore it to work and then a casual happy hour/birthday celebration).

Please come soon, spring!  It was so windy again over the weekend (although the sun was shining) but it seems like it’s back to rain for the week again.  At least the temperatures are holding in the 50s?  Seriously though, if it’s warm enough to wear bare legs where you are and I haven’t commented on your blog in a while it means I’m too depressed to read it.  Spring is definitely late this year.  All I can say is that my March 2010 archives from last year look a lot different than March 2011.

…so I just checked the archives for real and I was definitely wearing this mid-March 2010:

Just… less rain please, weather.  I know rain is good but I’m starting to feel like I should enter for an puddle jumping contest because I would totally win.  And I would really like to completely repeat that outfit again this spring.

Last Minute Change

25 March 2011

I’m wearing most of this, I swear, I just switched out the skirt last minute for a new one I got at J.Crew for $19.99 during the ice storm on Wednesday (seriously, I had to seek shelter).  The new skirt is a washed black cargo, similar to this but chino instead of denim.  It also looks a little less ragged and grey than my old Urban Outfitters skirt, which is a definite improvement.

This is the same scarf necklace that I wore here.  It looks very different depending on the way I tie it and I really enjoyed the versatility.  I may borrow it again for the weekend!

This week has made me want to revisit the idea of turning this into a black and white photography only blog.  I really really like black and white photos.

Join us for the last day?  Yesterday Lydia wore another fab skirt she made!

Spring Outerwear: Pink Coat

19 Mar 2011

I may have brought out this coat a little too early… I don’t think it’s spring trench weather quite yet (especially because it rained ice on my head twice today) although clearly last weekend I thought it was.  I’m just very happy to be able to have a little more variety with everything I wear.

I hope your first week of spring is… well, springy.  I know I could probably do without pelting by ice chunks.

Black and White Week!  If your skies are looking a little grey why not post in monochrome?

Coach scarf and coat, Anthropologie shirt (under there somewhere), LOFT skirt, Commando tights, Deena & Ozzy/Urban Outfitters shoes.

Weekend Boring

5 March 2011

Really, the only reason I got dressed on this particular Sunday was to take some close up photos for the internship’s blog.  And to go to the store.  I needed allergy medicine and almond milk.  This is pretty typical weekend wear for me though: no belt, no sweater, no extra pieces.  A sort of stripped down version of what I often wear during the week.

J.Crew shirt, Express skirt, Commando tights (I could be wrong though, they might have been HUE), Sofft shoes, b-side by ken + dana ring and bracelet.

Back to the Beginning

24 Feb 2011

I feel as if these photos are particularly timely today after Jessica of What I Wore’s post yesterday on “flattering” and the pressure to dress to impress (the comments on that post are great).  I still post photos that I’m not too happy with and outfits I don’t think are anything particularly great because let’s be honest, I am not a fashion magazine editor.  And that’s not what this blog is about, although that doesn’t mean I can’t love what Kate Lanphear and Anna Dello Russo wear.

This outfit is typical of days when I don’t do a lot of styling or am seeking something comfortable and unfussy.  Nothing really special or fashion-forward (I think I’m still a bit of a minimalist at heart).  I started this blog on outfits that look a lot like this one:  little dresses with belts and (usually) tights in a different color.  I’ve managed a lot of evolution since then but I think sometimes it’s not a bad idea to get back to your roots.

Everybody Everywear: Polka Dots

8 Mar 2011

I photographed this earlier, I’m in New York and probably won’t start taking photos outside until April (warmer, less layers to shed outside).  I haven’t worn this skirt in a while and I don’t really know why.  The only thing I don’t like about this skirt is its tendency to end up in odd lines (see above).  I used to wear it a lot last spring though, maybe it’s just one of those pieces that needed a temporary retirement and is back now?  I haven’t worn this shirt in a while either… I guess I just wanted to pull out some things that at one time were in heavy rotation in my closet.

This is my first time taking part in Everybody Everywear.  I can’t wait to see everyone’s polka dots!

Biiiig Scarf

10 Feb 2011

Fellow personal style blogger and stylish person Lydia was nice enough to send me an amazing email when I was searching for some inspiration, and it included this photo:

I’m not sure where this is from, maybe The Sartorialist or Stockholm Street Style?

Sort of?  No?  I feel like my scarf isn’t long enough to be that cool!

Like most of my clothing, this scarf has a memory.  New Year’s Eve, New York, frozen feet (ballet flats), not an available cab in sight.  I had to duck into Juicy Couture (I was twenty one at the time) and this scarf was on sale.  I loved the cream version I saw earlier in the fall but in person the grey just spoke to me, and the rest is history.

Wishing you good clothing memories and nice weather!

Love,

Alex

Grown Up Gossip Girl

7 Feb 2010

Still working on postmarks with the actual date.  Sometime soon I hope!  I might have to buy some, I’m not talented enough with graphics to create my own/don’t have the patience to learn.

This was my original Gossip Girl look.  This dress reminds me a lot of early Gossip Girl actually, like season one early.  I love the design but the fabric tends to frustrate me because it wrinkles so easily– that’s a €15 dress, I suppose.  I have good memories attached to it though.  Shopping in Ireland!  I do wish I had gone to some of the vintage stores but I hadn’t yet realized how good and popular they are at the time that I visited.  Next time for sure!

Happy Monday, everyone!  I’m in Chelsea today if anyone’s around (i.e. let’s go drink coffee at 5 and call it happy hour).

Love,

Alex
