What a serious heatwave we’ve been having lately… I hope you’ve been staying cool, hydrated, and safe from heatstroke. Lately I’ve been drinking an extra glass of water every day. I cut back on coffee, too, but there’s only so much you can do before a portable fan and bulk supply of mini Evian spray bottles start sounding like good idea.

I got this funny faux-fur charm as a Christmas gift and it’s been coming with me everywhere. It also made me remember how much I like tying square scarves onto my bags, so I brought a few of them out of storage.
The weather’s been so warm lately that I’ve decided to stop purchasing winter clothing for the rest of the season. I’m trying to be more mindful about the purchases I make this year, so I started a list of what I’m looking for.

I also wore this earlier in season, but this winter’s been so warm that it’s made a good holiday outfit as well. I can’t believe I took only a velvet blazer as a coat for several days this month. And I only wore a scarf at night.

When current events turn sad, I often shutter the blog for a while. Social media, too. I don’t like to say that I retreat from the world, but in many ways I do. I like to press pause for a while and spend a lot of time thinking. I like to ponder apocalypse planning (although this could also be caused by excessive episodes of The Walking Dead and Homeland).
If you celebrated Thanksgiving last week, I hope it was everything you wished for.

I bought this dress at the height of summer, but with long sleeves it was a definite no-go until the days became cooler. I could see it possibly being an okay winter dress, too, but we’ll see.
Kim took these photos for me ages ago. I did mean to post them in September as sort of an early fall look, but it turns out that we’re well into fall and still having some late summer weather.

Boo! Happy Halloween! In keeping with tradition, I put together a costume from the contents of my closet. You may remember this one from last year– I’m Frida Kahlo. She’s a favorite of mine, and I’ve always found her work deeply thought-provoking.
In addition to my Frida outfit, I also took a short walking tour through the neighborhood. We have a lot of excellent decorations this year. Everyone went all-out!

Normally I dress for ease of walking/moving during fashion week, but I always think it’s fun to choose a look or two to be as dramatic as possible.
This is my ease of walking/moving outfit. What? You thought it was the dramatic one?

I wore this to a recent bridal shower on a day that I wasn’t really feeling another of my summer dresses. Over the past few months I haven’t posted very many outfits, and part of the reason is that I’ve purchased very few things. Spring 2015 trends didn’t have much to offer me both body type and personal style-wise.

Earlier this spring, Milly did a collection for Kohl’s and while I looked, I didn’t order anything when it launched. However, I ended up at a Kohl’s a few months later and picked up this dress on super sale. It was 50 or 60% off, a good find for something from a collaboration.

Welcome to Letters from the City, a lifestyle photoblog.
My name is Alex and I have been blogging in some form or another since 1998. I’m a former Manhattanite now living the quieter life in Brooklyn. I like outerwear and red lipstick.
When I was younger, I was let loose in a GAP Kids one too many times, resulting in many of the fashion choices you see here in my photos. I also read, traveled, and took cooking and art classes. Art eventually led me around to photography, and to this day I do enjoy a good brunch.
Thank you for visiting! I hope you'll stay a while and get to know me. Learn More →
