On Location Again

August 24, 2011

Another day, another photoshoot. I photographed the my friend’s almost six-week old newborn, so I’m not wearing jewelry or anything that could accidentally damage baby’s skin.

I haven’t worn this skirt in forever! It’s from Express about a year ago or so. I started disliking the elastic waist and didn’t like any of my belts over it until I tried this one (Forever 21, my new favorite black belt). I got this Generra shirt from Marshalls five years ago and promptly cut off most of the sleeves, which used to bell out and end at the elbow.

This is another no looking day, I suppose. I don’t know what I’ve been doing lately when I take photos but it does not include looking at the camera. I’ll try and fix that, or at least be me conscious of the photos I’m taking.

A Close Look at a Favorite Skirt

This is another Visual FBFF from Fashion Beauty Friend Friday. This week it’s hosted by Ashley Getting Dressed and we’re taking a close look at a favorite clothing item. This is one of my favorite skirts, the label is TINY and it’s from Anthropologie. It’s a fairly current from Spring 2011 although it’s no longer available.

The yellow embroidery is my favorite part, followed by the smooth and floaty cotton voile. I also like the gathered panel centered on the waistband. I hung it in a tree to photograph it because I felt like that was something Anthropologie-y to do. A tree that it had rained on earlier. Not my brightest idea, I admit, but the skirt came out fine.

Have a good weekend, friends! If you’re going to be hit by the hurricane then stay safe and don’t go swimming– I did once two days before being evacuated and spent an hour being pulled out into the middle of the ocean. I’m planning on charging all my electronic devices, turning on HBO, and hiding under a blanket.

My favorite outfit with this skirt is from June 5th, 2011. I’m up so late doing this post that it’s past midnight, so I guess I’ll be heading over to Ashley Getting Dressed to post it now!

I’m Not Looking at You

navy h&m dress

It’s another exposed zipper! I must be on a zipper kick lately. For some reason I didn’t look at the camera in any of the photos I took. I was trying to do creative-but-normal poses and I guess that means no looking at the camera.

I’m wearing my Clarks granny sandals and this H&M dress that I love… but I don’t love on me. I’ve realized that that I really like dresses to have sleeves when the neckline is so high– balances my shoulders and height better. This dress is up for trade if anyone wants it! I’m planning on clearing out a few things from my closet so I might make a page of things to trade like Those Tricks, you can see things she wants to trade here. I’m still working on that dress you sent me, Stephanie! I haven’t forgotten about it… I am just not that good at alterations.

Something Old, Something New

I noticed recently on The Clothes Horse that Rebecca has been carrying her vintage black Coach bag. I’ve been looking for a black bag… and then I remembered that I have the Station bag, too. While it won’t go with all of my outfits, I’m enjoying its classic style.

The Station bag is one of the classic styles available on the Coach Classics page (how are you supposed to bookmark with the pop up layout?), but I’m sure it would be easy to find on Etsy as well. I’m also a fan of the Court bag. Too bad most Coach stores don’t carry the classics, I’d like to see it in person.

This is a new skirt! I got it at the Alexander Wang sample sale, and I bought the matching jacket too. It’s a casual fabric, so basically I have a little suit that sort of feels like loungewear. Both jacket and skirt are from the T line but I did get a dress from the flagship line. It’s very similar to the dress I already have. What can I say, I’m a creature of habit.

The House in the Woods (+FBFF)

16 August 2011

This is what happens when I try to get creative with my poses. Awkward. I’m really terrible at twirl photos, and this is the best one I have.

Light on the accessories. I’m wearing my grandmother’s vintage engagement ring and wedding band. They’re a little small for my right hand, but I think they go well with a ring passed to me from a friend’s grandmother (costume jewelry, I would never take anything meaningful).

I’ve recently become obsessed with this sweater again. I used to love it when I was younger… I think I’ve had it since I was sixteen. I spent most of the day applying for jobs, which is really coincidental with this week’s FBFF questions: dream jobs!

1. Fess up – if you could do anything professionally what would it be? Personal shopper! Or professional gift buyer.

2. What draws you to this? I like helping people select clothing that fits and that they actually want to wear. I want to make people feel good about themselves. My friends have been requesting my services since about the 8th grade and they still call me to say I need this, take me shopping!

3. When did you first start dreaming about this ideal? Ehhh… recently? Last December, when I decided to stop searching for jobs in politics and international affairs (what my degree is in) because after a year it led to nothing and was making me sad. So instead I started interning for a jewelry company in New York.

4. What’s holding you back from going all in? Truthfully, I don’t know that it would still be something I would want to do if it was an actual full time job. And running your own business is hard, I’d rather work for a company because I’d have more exposure to the fashion world and I think I’d have more opportunities to meet people as well. But perhaps I’ll revisit the idea in ten years or so.

5. Sometimes the first step is the hardest… what’s one step you can take now on the way to realizing your dream? I’m applying for jobs in fashion right now, specifically in PR, marketing, and social media. If you know of any openings send them my way!

What I Wear to Take People’s Photos

13 August 2011

It’s true, I really am that ridiculous. Not the best choice of outfits for a photoshoot, but by now you should realize that I wouldn’t be wearing sweatpants. Even if I was rolling around in the grass to change my perspective and get some cool baby bump shots and eek I almost rolled right into rabbit poo (that’s okay, I guess it’s just clover after all…). I was wearing my lace edged slip anyway, you can see it peeking out a little.

The hat is the only really functional piece. Keeps the sun out of my eyes, especially when I’m placing a subject with her back to the sun.

I’m wearing my old Free People dress from spring 2009, Calypso for Target belt, J.Crew hat and ribbon tied around it, and Stuart Weitzman flatforms (on sale now!!).

Pre-Photoshoot in the Gardens

12 August 2011

These are actually test shots for a maternity photoshoot that I stood in for to check the light. My friend (of the baby shower) asked me for some artsy black and white photos. So I needed to scout locations for privacy and test the light beforehand. I think I found some lovely options.

I wore black and white because my friend has paler skin than I do and will be wearing black. I wanted as close to possible as that so I could get a more accurate idea of how the contrast will turn out once I black and white the photos. A really good back and white photograph is much more than just applying a filter. Location also matters.

These photos make me realize how much I need my hair cut. The last time I went to the salon was February… I think? I’m definitely going to call for an appointment!

With Inspiration

10 August 2011

Lately I’ve been inspired by Chic on the Cheap, and I’m sure you saw What I Wore earlier this week (I like referring to bloggers by their blog names, don’t ask me why). Lydia always wears her shirts tied or knotted in the front so I decided to do it too. I’ve never worn this shirt tied before and it actually looks better this way that any other way I’ve worn it.

I hardly ever wear these shoes either and I don’t know why. They’re actually pretty comfortable and feel like slippers so I should definitely add them into the rotation. I’m sure they’d be good for walking around New York. I just can’t wear them in the rain like on Tuesday.

Banana Republic shirt, J.Crew skirt, Minnetonka moccasins.

Sun, Clouds, Rain

9 August 2011

Sometimes I think it’s going to be all sunny and wonderful even if there are supposed to be thunderstorms, so then I wear suede shoes and cream silk. Seriously, I was gearing up for a sunny day, the sun woke me up this morning rather than my phone. Luckily I managed to change out of the shoes and the cream silk is due for a cleaning anyway.
