Welcome to Letters from the City, a lifestyle photoblog.
My name is Alex and I have been blogging in some form or another since 1998. I’m a former Manhattanite now living the quieter life in Brooklyn. I like outerwear and red lipstick.
When I was younger, I was let loose in a GAP Kids one too many times, resulting in many of the fashion choices you see here in my photos. I also read, traveled, and took cooking and art classes. Art eventually led me around to photography, and to this day I do enjoy a good brunch.
Thank you for visiting! I hope you'll stay a while and get to know me. Learn More →

That Wang dress has a thousand faces and ways to be worn and I love them all. And I spy a cute dress with a feather trim that looks right up my alley- I wanted a feather trim jacket from Elizabeth and James and clearly, still sad it got away. Maybe for 2012…
Alex Elizabeth says
I almost wore the feather dress for NYE, but I didn’t want to be completely ridiculous, haha. Maybe you could DIY a feather jacket? I’m a terrible DIYer, but it seems like one of those projects that wouldn’t be too difficult.

Meow- I love that one shoulder drapy, snakeskin dress! I’m also glad to know that I’m not the only person who wraps my scarf around my face! Happy New Year :)
Alex Elizabeth says
The snakeskin is a lot of fun, the bottom’s very swishy. I love the scarf around the face look, too! Maybe we should start a scarf around the face day. Happy New Year!

You look so striking in that snake maxi, and in color! I think I’d forgotten you even owned other colors there has been so much black lately.
Now whenever I don’t know what to wear, I think, how would Alex make black look totally causal? (because I always feel more dressed up in black)
Hope you have a fun NYE!! (are you going to be in NYC?)
Alex Elizabeth says
I almost wore the snake maxi last night, but I was trying not to be completely ridiculous. I don’t think I succeeded because apparently leather skirt means toned down for me. I think the key to feeling less dressed in black is to layer. And add a scarf! Or maybe it’s just practice… I used to feel really conspicuous in red lipstick, but I got over it.
Not in New York for New Year, and it would have been the one year Times Square would have actually been okay– not freezing last night! Oh well…
Lyddiegal says
I know, that’s what I was thinking. I’ve never been – and it’s an even year – which sounds silly, but I like even numbers better.
It’s gotten to the point where I don’t even bother asking what my friends are doing, because they never want to go out.
Alex Elizabeth says
I’ve never been in Times Square for the midnight countdown, but it is not really fun. Security makes it really hard to get anywhere in Midtown that day, and it does get really crowded. And if it’s 20 degrees it’s really unpleasantly windy. I don’t even know what half of my friends did. You could have come to Pennsylvania!
Lyddiegal says
Well. We’ll have to make plans for next year… We shall have to come up with something grand.
