Life is a Cabaret, Old Chum, Only a Cabaret

Dear Lydia,

‘Twas the week of holiday parties and all through the city… First up: Steve Brings It! at Steve Madden with Keiko, who is just the nicest person ever. It can be a little weird and intimidating meeting really well known bloggers, but Keiko was so easy to talk to. Some sage advice I receieved Tuesday night: if you don’t store your handbags in their dustbags use them to carry your shoes! You can see Keiko’s recap of the event on Keiko LynnNnenna and I are in there amongst the instagrams!

The House in the Woods (+FBFF)

16 August 2011

This is what happens when I try to get creative with my poses. Awkward. I’m really terrible at twirl photos, and this is the best one I have.

Light on the accessories. I’m wearing my grandmother’s vintage engagement ring and wedding band. They’re a little small for my right hand, but I think they go well with a ring passed to me from a friend’s grandmother (costume jewelry, I would never take anything meaningful).

I’ve recently become obsessed with this sweater again. I used to love it when I was younger… I think I’ve had it since I was sixteen. I spent most of the day applying for jobs, which is really coincidental with this week’s FBFF questions: dream jobs!

1. Fess up – if you could do anything professionally what would it be? Personal shopper! Or professional gift buyer.

2. What draws you to this? I like helping people select clothing that fits and that they actually want to wear. I want to make people feel good about themselves. My friends have been requesting my services since about the 8th grade and they still call me to say I need this, take me shopping!

3. When did you first start dreaming about this ideal? Ehhh… recently? Last December, when I decided to stop searching for jobs in politics and international affairs (what my degree is in) because after a year it led to nothing and was making me sad. So instead I started interning for a jewelry company in New York.

4. What’s holding you back from going all in? Truthfully, I don’t know that it would still be something I would want to do if it was an actual full time job. And running your own business is hard, I’d rather work for a company because I’d have more exposure to the fashion world and I think I’d have more opportunities to meet people as well. But perhaps I’ll revisit the idea in ten years or so.

5. Sometimes the first step is the hardest… what’s one step you can take now on the way to realizing your dream? I’m applying for jobs in fashion right now, specifically in PR, marketing, and social media. If you know of any openings send them my way!

Brights and Neutrals + FBFF First Questions

Have to be honest, this is not one of my favorite outfits.  You ever have a day when you just feel uncomfortable with what you’re wearing?  I felt really conspicuous the entire day.  It’s because I don’t think the skirt is neutral (light) enough to go with the punchy red shirt.  I felt kind of garish or something.

This scarf is a recent addition.  It’s Oscar de la Renta via Etsy, and yes, scarves totally have something to do with Pay It Forward.  I actually have one more spot available for that, email me if you’d like the last thing handmade by me (but you also have to pay it forward to five people on your blog).

The questions this week are the original ones that FBFF launched with.  I wasn’t part of FBFF at its beginning so they’re new to me!

1. Which celebrity (celebrities) do you look to for fashion inspiration?
Does Carolina Engman count?  She’s totally a blogging celebrity, right?  Lately she’s inspired me to shop for neon colors when so many of the stores in the U.S. are showing very oatmeal neutrals.  And Rumi Neely, although I wouldn’t necessarily wear the same things she does.

2. When it comes to your own personal style, what inspires you?
My fellow style bloggers inspire me much more than celebrities or blogging celebrities, actually.  Most of us don’t get gifted things all the time or attend Fashion Week.  I like to see everyday fashion more than anything else.  However, runway trends do inspire me (hello, neon and bright colors).

Anna Betty Caitlin Garance Hanh Jane Jessica Katy Kendi Lydia Shenneth Stephanie Terra Yeri

3. How do you hope to inspire your readers?
It’s nice that I sometimes inspire my readers but I don’t think it’s really necessary to inspire other people with my blog.  I just hope they like what I’m doing.  I think among style bloggers it’s often the case that we appreciate each others’ personal styles even if they aren’t our own.  Essentially we just want to see what we’re all wearing.

4. Outside the realm of fashion who/what inspires you?
The weather.  No, seriously.  Whenever it rains I want to wear neon in protest.  Also photography, especially nature and wildlife.  Almost every day I go around and take photos constantly with my iPhone or Fred or my old Sony, whatever I have.  And I don’t know if they’re for inspiration or if the photographer in me just sees beauty everywhere.  Usually I just forget about them until I’m browsing the camera roll on the train or something.  All the photos in this post are iPhone photos taken in the past few months (bonus points if you can figure out exact locations).

5. And since Idol is ending… Which songs inspire you?
…I have no idea what’s going on with American Idol right now, I totally haven’t watched that since Kelly Clarkson.  Right now Queen, Adele, Lissie, and Florence And The Machine feature heavily on my playlist.  Along with some Stevie Wonder, Soft Cell, Steely Dan, and Gin Blossoms sprinkled in.

Last of Summer: Bohemian…ish

8.31.10 ~ Tuesday ~ Goodbye August

Does my hair look softer?  I tried.  The very straight look I’ve been sporting lately just doesn’t go very well with this dress and makes me wish for my usual slightly longer, curly hair.  I haven’t worn this dress as much as in summer past because, yes, I don’t think my hair goes with it.  Also, I always have a problem deciding on shoes!  I have very minimalist gold leather sandals that go well with this.  But they are flats.  And I think we all know how I feel about flats.  For traveling only, and then only when absolutely necessary.  So I just can’t wear them casually during the day.  Can’t.

Last of Summer: Pink Dress

8.30.10 ~ Monday

I tend to wear this dress frequently throughout the summer but I’ve never posted a photo — it tends to photograph very poorly, either overexposed or much too dark.  As you can see in the photos there is a huge discrepancy in color and the dress does not look like either of the photos anyway…

This is the lightest piece of clothing I own and it’s reserved pretty much exclusively for days in excess of 95 degrees.  Which we’ve been having since Sunday.  Promise I haven’t been living in this dress all week (eeeew).  Are you tired of this belt yet?  This weekend I’m planning to look for a few new ones for fall!

The Embellished Tee Goes to the Market

7.1.2010 ~ Thursday ~ Hello July

Ann Taylor Loft is having a really good sale right now — I got this shirt at the 40% off everything sale and currently sale items are 50% off!  I almost never wear tees like this but I like the beading.  Maybe I’ll go back and look for more embellished shirts!

I wore this to the farmers market and then to do errands about town.  This is a not too fashiony look and really just summer comfortable.  Temperatures are out. of. control. here, and I can’t be flouncing about in cardigans and terrycloth (a bit heavy) all the time!  Sometimes I think it’s good to be practical even if it’s not the most styled look you’ve ever worn!

Flowers on the Patio

6.11.2010 ~ Friday ~ South of the Mason-Dixon Line

I spent the end of last week traveling and attending celebrations.  Friday evening was my friend’s graduation party, her parents are longtime friends of the family.  It was definitely a warm one!  And I managed to get bit by a mosquito sometime during thirty second trip from car to house.  I sometimes think I would benefit from a mosquito repellent that is injected in the blood!

This almost an exact repeat of something I wore in early April.  I just changed the shoes.

The Print

5.20.2010 Thursday

It was humid on Thursday!  So I opted for a summery dress.  This post was actually meant to test this dress as a possible guest of wedding look, but I’ve ordered the Aidan Mattox one so I won’t be considering this any more!  It is 100% silk and the ceremony is at 4:30 pm, otherwise I wouldn’t have considered it.

When I read the reviews on Anthropologie a lot of people noted that the top of the dress folds… and now I understand what they meant.  Maybe a good tailor can do something about that?  This dress also needs to be shortened three or four inches I think, and I’d like darts put in because the skirt is just so voluminous!

Multicolor print dress (Anthropologie), turquoise necklace (vintage), tan wedge sandals (Steve Madden).

twenty. three.

5.6.2010 Thursday and tumblr did not save my draft the only time I have wanted it to…

My birthday!  I was out for lunch and dinner.  Yum!  I’ve heard twenty three is a difficult birthday and the recommended course of action is to wallow about old age for at least half the day and then go perk up with some Starbucks.  I napped and perked up with some Starbucks… before dinner.

I wanted to photograph this dress in full sun but overexposure was a huge problem — so bright!  So here it is in sun/shade and it appears to have a splotchy pattern… that mysteriously moves in each photo!

I received my first present from the mailman… well really from Christi.  The scarf and necklace are from her and I decided to wear them as I was getting dressed and talking to her on gchat.  She was glad she could accessorize my outfit without trying! :)  This is a relatively new Diane von Furstenberg dress, although it’s actually from S/S ‘09 collection and deeply discounted on Yoox.  I may wear it to a wedding in June but I am not sure.  It’s quite sheer and I feel it makes my hips look unusually wide due to the volume at the sides.  You can see where it’s folded at the waist, otherwise part of the dress sticks straight out of the body and thank goodness for the wide sash!  It also has very, very high side slits… it is actually from the soleil + swim line.  So I’m now questioning if I am going to wear it.  We’ll see!  I think I definitely have to test run it again sometime this month!

Yellow dress (Diane von Furstenberg), peacock print scarf (somewhere in Manhattan Beach), turquoise necklace (vintage from a store in Austin), tan wedge sandals (Steve Madden).
