I Think It’s The Shoes

20 Feb 2011

So I don’t totally love this outfit…  I think it’s the shoes.  I expected them to blend in with the navy tights (worn with the help of Spanx) a little bit more, but… they didn’t.  I should have probably dug up some brown sandals or something, no matter if they would have been slightly ridiculous with snow still on the ground.

I wore this to go do some general running around.  And then I just suddenly happened to be in the Coach store.  I did receive a really good discount from them in the mail ($100 off $300 or more) so I just wanted to look around and see the spring collection.  They pressure you a lot to buy things though, and that really makes me not want to go to the store.  I was also so surprised that no one in the store could recognize a vintage Coach bag.  I guess Coach has changed a lot since I was younger and they’ve done a lot of rebranding.  I think they’re losing touch with their classic look… which makes me sad.

Change in seasons has been wreaking havoc with my sinuses so I have such dark undereye circles now, I didn’t walk into a wall or something.  But I’m enjoying the clear sidewalks for the first time in a long time and I hope you are too!

Very Mary Kate

12 Feb 2011

I happened to pass by one half of my freshman year (high school) homecoming dress just sitting there… and decided to throw it on.  Then I remembered a long time ago when MK wore this to an event:

(via hot minute)

Except I didn’t look up the photo beforehand and I should have tucked in the shirt and borrowed a cross necklace from the studio.  I probably will wear this again sometime with the cross, and maybe I’ll even dig up a bag!  I borrowed this bracelet for the weekend, it’s a sample so I think there’s actually only this one.  I think it’s pretty cool but it was never put into production.

Anyone working on the FBFF Awards right now?  If you’d like to promo someone for a category let me know in the comments.  There are so many wonderful FBFF bloggers that I don’t really know who to nominate!  But come back tomorrow and check– one of them could be you!

Love,

Alex

J.Crew shirt, LOFT belt, Jessica McClintock for Gunne Sax (what a throwback) skirt, b-side by ken + dana sample bracelet, HUE tights and Target boots under there somewhere.

If you’ve gotten this far (sorry, long) can you see my favicon?  It keeps going on and off and it’s driving me nuts.  I don’t know what to do.  I even uploaded it directly into my main directory.  What is going onnnn maybe I’m just going crazy?

Biiiig Scarf

10 Feb 2011

Fellow personal style blogger and stylish person Lydia was nice enough to send me an amazing email when I was searching for some inspiration, and it included this photo:

I’m not sure where this is from, maybe The Sartorialist or Stockholm Street Style?

Sort of?  No?  I feel like my scarf isn’t long enough to be that cool!

Like most of my clothing, this scarf has a memory.  New Year’s Eve, New York, frozen feet (ballet flats), not an available cab in sight.  I had to duck into Juicy Couture (I was twenty one at the time) and this scarf was on sale.  I loved the cream version I saw earlier in the fall but in person the grey just spoke to me, and the rest is history.

Wishing you good clothing memories and nice weather!

Love,

Alex

Grown Up Gossip Girl

7 Feb 2010

Still working on postmarks with the actual date.  Sometime soon I hope!  I might have to buy some, I’m not talented enough with graphics to create my own/don’t have the patience to learn.

This was my original Gossip Girl look.  This dress reminds me a lot of early Gossip Girl actually, like season one early.  I love the design but the fabric tends to frustrate me because it wrinkles so easily– that’s a €15 dress, I suppose.  I have good memories attached to it though.  Shopping in Ireland!  I do wish I had gone to some of the vintage stores but I hadn’t yet realized how good and popular they are at the time that I visited.  Next time for sure!

Happy Monday, everyone!  I’m in Chelsea today if anyone’s around (i.e. let’s go drink coffee at 5 and call it happy hour).

Love,

Alex

The Purples

sunday 6 feb 2011

Hello my dears!  I didn’t feel strongly about either team playing the Super Bowl this year so I decided I needed to wear nearly head-to-toe purple.  I hardly every do monochrome unless it’s head to toe black so this outfit was… interesting for me.  Maybe I should have gone with the cream camisole after all?  I know I look rather out of season but I seriously couldn’t resist, it was 38 degrees.  That’s a huge heatwave considering it’s been falling to the teens after the sun goes down!

Seriously though, how tired of snow boots are you?  I needed to wear this floral sweater to brighten up my winter.  Bye, have a good weekend, and happy fashion week!!

Love,

Alex

Almost Too Dark

My dear friends,

I almost didn’t get photos of the outfit I wore to the dinner party because it was going on six o’clock when I finished dressing.  The exposure value is pushed all the way up and the flash is on as well in these photos.  So the color/lighting is a little odd- the farther I stand from the camera the more the photos look darker and less focused (sorry).  I shot this look before a long time ago but forgot about it, I skipped photos because I was so behind.  I didn’t wear it anywhere good anyway, so definitely no harm in repeating!  I do occasionally repeat entire outfits that I’m really fond of.

The dinner party was excellent!  Dinner parties at that household are never to be missed.  If you’re out of state then come back, seriously.  I ate so much.  I never can say no to corned beef and the home made banana chocolate cake with icing made entirely out of chocolate.  I can hardly ever eat cake any more due to too much milk in the icing so of course I ate two pieces (they were thin, I swear)!

Alex

Some Old Things and One New

Tuesday 18 Jan 2011

Salutations!  I guess I’m just into the vintage look/old looking photo look right now.  Probably has something to do with me working on the blog layout a little more.  I thought it was loading too slowly so I made a few adjustments.  If anything crazy goes down with the CSS in the next couple don’t worry, I’ll fix it!

I got two new belts at the LOFT 40% off sale!  I love buying belts when they have huge sales like that.  This is one of them.  I intended to wear it with the LOFT safari dress (and with other things too of course) but the dress didn’t fit me at all.  Petites were too tight through the chest and shoulder and I ended up swimming in regular sizes.  Sigh.  I really like that dress.

I’ve fallen behind on posts again, which means I’ll be posting through the weekend, tomorrow as well.  If you’re not out playing in the snow (or sun, lucky things) pop by the blog tomorrow!

Love,

Alex

Winter Outerwear: Three Old Favorites

Tuesday 18 Jan 2011

Oh, hello!  Snow day!

***Who’s going to Evolving Influence this year?

Another bit of minimal styling.  Well it was just me crunching around outside.  We had an ice storm and I really wanted photos of everything so I braved the outdoors.  Everything looked so delicate, like I could shatter the world with my fingertips.

Still dreaming of L.L. Bean duck boots but they’re on backorder until March.  The worst of the snow will be over by then, so I’m not sure if I should get them.  These are my favorite old wellingtons, I’ve had them since my first year of college.  I think they were a Christmas gift because first semester was incredibly rainy and I wore flip flops all the time because UGGs + downpour = all kinds of bad.  They have good traction and I love the tweed and velvet faux-buckle, but the feet get cold cold cold in the snow!  I’d love to have lined boots for snowy days.

This is also my favorite winter coat, although I can’t wear it much these days.  I got it when I was twenty and um… parts of me have grown since then.  I can’t button that top button any more, and open coats and temperatures in the teens and twenties are not friends.  But since I was just messing around with my camera in the yard for a little I decided I would be safe from frostbite.

By the time I went out in the afternoon the ice storm was a slush storm– I got out the old rainforest umbrella and sort of perched it on top of my head while I traipsed through the snow for photos.  I use this umbrella a lot during the winter.  And really any time it rains because it’s my favorite one.  I love the old-fashioned curved wooden handle and the uncollapsible design because it never flips inside out.  This is my third outerwear post, my other winter outerwear posts are purple coat and vintage fur.

If you’re on the east coast I hope your days are becoming less icy and your commutes less treacherous!

Love,

Alex

On Wednesdays We Wear Pink

Worn on Wednesday 5 Jan 2011

These are back photos from before the snow.

On Wednesday I went to Pottery Barn for euro shams.  I ended up getting mismatched ones, one of which is from the faux sheepskin collection.  And I might have to go back for the throw.  I got it for my friends as a wedding gift last year and I had a really hard time giving it away!

I wore my oxfords because I ended up with a private yoga lesson Tuesday night.  I was the only one at class and it was kind of killer.  I felt really unsteady Wednesday morning and I actually made the responsible decision to wear completely flat shoes.

Sorry my shirt is doing weird things in these photos.  I almost steamed it but then I decided I liked it wrinkled.  The front is silk and just didn’t want to drape properly when tucked into the skirt.  I like this shirt so much that I sort of want it in the other two colors too… I have always had a problem with wanting multiples of clothes I love!

J.Crew shirt, Anthropologie/Odille skirt, Anthropologie belt, HUE tights, Cole Haan oxfords, LV bag + Coach scarf.

I also made the cookies featured on Stylish White Female back in December.  I intended to make them back in December but ran out of time during the holidays.

I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing that these are so sweet they actually gave me a headache (and I adore sweets).  A good thing because I can only eat two at a time… a bad thing if I can’t have just two!  I’ll definitely be making these again!  Maybe next time a little less sugar :)

Winter Outerwear: Snow Falling

I really hope you like these photos because I almost got eaten by a hawk while I was kneeling to get a better shot of those holly leaves.  It was eyeing the back of my head the whole time and making me very, very nervous.  I thought it was going to try to pick me up by the collar and fly off with me.

Luckily I was spared!  I was treated to a glorious view of its brown and white spotted underside as it flew away.  I guess it decided I wouldn’t make very good prey after all.  Unfortunately it was gone in a blink and I was unable to capture it in a photo.

I wish I could tell you what kind of hawk, but I’m not a very good bird-watcher.  My father is though, he definitely would have been able to identify what type of hawk.

I wasn’t going to take any photos of myself, but once I got outside I thought the snow was just too nice.  I definitely had one of those weirdo dressing days where I thought I wasn’t exactly myself.  I hardly ever wear this much color all at once… I mean, green tights?

Hahaa one snowflake fell on my head and apparently my hair is big enough that it didn’t melt while I was taking photos.

After I photographed the fur I decided to do a coat series, but I didn’t do a very good job with this coat.  I’ll have to get photos with the collar buttoned up sometime, it looks very different!

Expect more outerwear soon!
