Zebra Pretending to Live in a Forest

Dear Dotty,

Whenever I’m not in New York I like to pretend that I live in the forest, but as you can see by the paved road that’s definitely not true. Even if the trees are very tall and forest-like.

I haven’t worn this skirt in a long long while because it doesn’t wear well with tights and it wrinkles terribly in the front. Tried to casual it up by wearing the plain shirt, but I couldn’t resist the lure of the pink belt or nude pumps. I’m enjoying bare legs as much as I can even if the temperatures have definitely been too cool for them lately. There’ve been a lot of shivery mornings. …

Over The Rainbow

Got that rainbow flare again, always a surprise when that shows up because it’s not visible when the photo is being taken. These are my best spring neutrals!  Though I feel as if neutrals are everywhere now so I don’t want to wear them as much.  I want some hot pink skirts!  Unfortunately none of the ones I tried at Zara fit, all either too big or too small.  I’ll just have to keep looking (but if you know of any hot pink/fuchsia skirts do tell, I’m dying to have one).

Happy spring!  It’s beach sunny in New York right now, you could get a tan walking on the street.  I’m off to the Rebecca Minkoff sample sale and twitter says there’s already a huge line (noooooooooooo), so wish me luck finding a pink bag!

Pinky

Chomp chomp chomp… I’m currently munching on a baguette from Pret and looking at recent invites.  The Rebecca Minkoff VIP sample sale is tomorrow if anyone wants to go, I might RSVP (but seriously I do not need another handbag) and the Seychelles Garden Party is Wednesday (complimentary Chopin vodka cocktails– um, yum Chopin is really good).  Anyone in/around New York let me know if you’re going!

I wore this last week to work on a really humid day and mostly without the scarf.  Maybe a little too summery-looking but was really really humid and I had my tan jacket for outside.  Maybe a little overdressed too but I was getting bored, might as well wear the clothes I have.  I haven’t worn this dress in a while because it doesn’t lend itself to layering well.  There’s just too much volume in the skirt for a jacket or cardigan and then I end up looking like a big patterned fluffball.  I decided it would be a good idea to hem this dress myself… that’s why the back looks weird.  I think I’m going to have to take it to a tailor to be fixed or redone.  I honestly really should have learned by now…

twenty. four. (and friend friday)

Another year.  I first wore this dress one year ago.  Not much has changed except the hair and accessories.  I’m headed out of New York for a thoroughly boring weekend in the country… but if left to my own devices in New York I will go shopping.  And it will be bad (Bergdorf Goodman and Lanvin kind of bad, most likely).

This is what I wore to the bridal shower last Sunday, for the second of my friends in my immediate age group to marry.  I’ve been getting to wear my favorite shoes again now that the weather is turning– nude patent just doesn’t seem to work during Northeast winters.  And this week’s FBFF is about shoes!  A topic I’m sure is very near and dear to many of our hearts.

1. What is your go-to pair of shoes?
My nude patent leather platforms from Sofft.  I think I’ve worn them about 200 times in the past year.  Okay maybe not that many, but I wore them practically every day from April – October.  I’m considering buying this season’s updated model with a peep toe.
I don’t tend to spend a large proportion of my wardrobe money on shoes because more expensive shoes tend to be narrow and I just can’t wear them.  I was fortunate to go to a Manolo Blahnik sample sale a few years ago but I couldn’t get my feet into any of the shoes!

I apparently missed the memo about bright shoes for the bridal shower…

2. What goes into your shoe buying decisions?
Quality, price, and the balance.  I can’t wear any shoes that make you feel like you’re leaning forward, it’s just too uncomfortable for me.  My feet are a Disaster-with-a-capital-D from ballet and I have a very unstable left knee.  I’ve learned to spend a little bit more for quality shoes and it definitely helps me out.

3. The majority of the shoes in your closet are what color?
Black.  I even have a ton of black sandals, I guess it’s just a thing?

4. When it comes to design shoes what are your favorite brands and why?
I like Frye, which is pretty much the only brand I’ve stayed with from high school on.  They’re (generally) comfortable and well made.  Cole Haan has decent comfort as well, but I have the hardest time tracking down shoes in wide widths, even at the stores.  I like Sofft for casual, comfortable shoes and Ferragamo for classic shapes.  Dream shoe wardrobe-wise, I would want them all to be Cole Haan, Stuart Weitzman, and Salvatore Ferragamo (all make shoes in wide widths).

5. If price wasn’t an issue, you’d own which shoe?
Yves Saint Laurent Tribute Sandals or custom Sergio Rossi.  I was incredibly tempted by YSL platforms last year (not these Tribute sandals but similar) but the price of YSL shoes is kind of killer at $700+.  Maybe someday.  I’ll have to start filling a very large jar up with spare change for shoes…

Remember the Time I…

wore this last week?  Well, I wore it again with basically one modification.

Yeah, how original of me… copying myself!  I actually like the original better because of the necklace.  Unfortunately a necklace won’t work with this shirt, the top just ends up crumpled.  Also, these pants need to be hemmed right away.  Somehow during the course of the day they actually managed to end up under my 3.5 inch heels.  Not so good, but at least I noticed and didn’t wear a hole through the bottoms (I have been guilty of that on many occasions before– you’d think I’d learn!).

I have a bridal shower to attend tomorrow (for a wedding that I received a +1 invitation to… I’m old).  What should I wear?  I’m planning on being the Hipstamatic paparazzi there and I may even buy a new Hipstapak for the occasion.

Yeah, I’m that cool.

Where The Road Goes

This cross necklace is one of the surprise MVPs of the things I’ve borrowed.  It’s more versatile than I originally thought and it adds a bit of edge to anything.  Definitely one of ny favorites to borrow, although this is the first time I’ve worn the gold version.

For some reason this vest never makes it into photos, I don’t know why… it’s a little camera shy.  I just realized that it’s almost Easter and I don’t have anything to wear.  Okay, that’s a lie, but when I was younger I used to have Easter dresses.  I got a new dress for Easter every year and then I’d probably wear it again for any events in the summer.  I guess I’ve never gotten over that and every spring leaves me with a need-to-get-a-dress-now-it’s-almost-Easter-ahhhh feeling.

Ugh.  This wind!

Rain Rain Go Away

So about that spring thing… aren’t torrential downpours fun?  I had to put up my hair despite the umbrella as it was impossible to go out on Saturday without being soaked.  I swear it was raining from the ground up to the sky at one point.  I hardly ever put my hair up but am strongly considering it as a regular style due to the excessive amounts of rain… and I think it’s never a bad time for a bit of change.  I’m also taking suggestions for different hairstyles (bored of my short cut) but keep in mind that the back is significantly shorter and barely covers my neck.

I had a rather lazy Saturday and at one point I think I was actually a zombie, my allergies were that bad.  I’ve been doing the crazy hyped up/spaced out Mucinex DM thing since then and I’m not sure if I’m going to pass out or bounce off the walls right now.  But good news, I’m much better than I was on Saturday!

I had a little fun with some borrowed jewelry too.  The seafoam color of the ring and earrings just went so well with my ombre sweater.  I think I’m definitely going to try wearing this color combination again this spring.  I’m adding seafoam to the list of colors I’m committed to finding.

Spring Outerwear & Summer Jewelry

I ended up rushed to take these before I had to change and get ready to go out, which resulted in about three photos that were actually in focus.  And which means I didn’t get any head to toe photos without the coat, only the portraits were usable.  But I am just wearing jeans, you can probably just fill them in with your imagination!  This vintage coat was a gift from my cousin around the winter holidays.  I’ve worn it between then and now but this is the first time I’ve actually gotten a photo.  It’s a good spring/fall weight jacket and blocks the wind wonderfully.  However, that means it’s also far too warm for temperatures above 70, I would definitely roast!

I pulled out my summer jewelry because I was feeling especially bright.  The bangles are from seasons past at J.Crew and still among my favorite pieces.  The turquoise bracelet was a gift from a friend.  Isn’t the color really wonderful?  It’s not really a valuable type of turquoise (I basically play with pretty rocks at work now) but I think I prefer it because it’s more interesting.  My turquoise necklace is also vintage and a gift from the same friend for my birthday last year.  Hard to believe it’s actually only a few weeks away again…

The Reoccurring Dress and Belt Combination

A while ago (I think it may have been for FBFF) I said I didn’t really have a go-to outfit.  That’s not entirely true: I don’t have one, but if I’m pressed for time and don’t like anything I’ve put on yet I tend to repeat at least 50% of something previously worn.  I’ve photographed this exact same belt and dress at least twice before on the blog and I can tell you I’ve worn it at least six more times than that (both of these are so old I’ve had them since before I started taking photos).

Also, have you ever felt like you’ve just had a bad hair month?  I feel that way about March.  I’m still hoping for that “out like a lamb” weather to happen… March, you have 14 more hours.
