Swapped Stripes and Leather

September 20, 2011

Okay, so… the topstitching on my jacket is definitely coming out at the bottom. I have to find someone to fix it. I confess I don’t even remember what I was doing on this day because it was so long ago. I need to load photos in a more timely manner than I have been for the past month. What happened to the weekend, for serious… it’s Sunday? And for that matter what happened to September too. October really crept up on me.

Wearing my Ellen Tracy rain coat, Xhilaration/Target striped shirt from the ModSwap, Gap leather skirt, French Sole flats, and bag I can’t remember the name of stolen from my roommate.

Over The Rainbow

Got that rainbow flare again, always a surprise when that shows up because it’s not visible when the photo is being taken. These are my best spring neutrals!  Though I feel as if neutrals are everywhere now so I don’t want to wear them as much.  I want some hot pink skirts!  Unfortunately none of the ones I tried at Zara fit, all either too big or too small.  I’ll just have to keep looking (but if you know of any hot pink/fuchsia skirts do tell, I’m dying to have one).

Happy spring!  It’s beach sunny in New York right now, you could get a tan walking on the street.  I’m off to the Rebecca Minkoff sample sale and twitter says there’s already a huge line (noooooooooooo), so wish me luck finding a pink bag!

Brights and Neutrals + FBFF First Questions

Have to be honest, this is not one of my favorite outfits.  You ever have a day when you just feel uncomfortable with what you’re wearing?  I felt really conspicuous the entire day.  It’s because I don’t think the skirt is neutral (light) enough to go with the punchy red shirt.  I felt kind of garish or something.

This scarf is a recent addition.  It’s Oscar de la Renta via Etsy, and yes, scarves totally have something to do with Pay It Forward.  I actually have one more spot available for that, email me if you’d like the last thing handmade by me (but you also have to pay it forward to five people on your blog).

The questions this week are the original ones that FBFF launched with.  I wasn’t part of FBFF at its beginning so they’re new to me!

1. Which celebrity (celebrities) do you look to for fashion inspiration?
Does Carolina Engman count?  She’s totally a blogging celebrity, right?  Lately she’s inspired me to shop for neon colors when so many of the stores in the U.S. are showing very oatmeal neutrals.  And Rumi Neely, although I wouldn’t necessarily wear the same things she does.

2. When it comes to your own personal style, what inspires you?
My fellow style bloggers inspire me much more than celebrities or blogging celebrities, actually.  Most of us don’t get gifted things all the time or attend Fashion Week.  I like to see everyday fashion more than anything else.  However, runway trends do inspire me (hello, neon and bright colors).

Anna Betty Caitlin Garance Hanh Jane Jessica Katy Kendi Lydia Shenneth Stephanie Terra Yeri

3. How do you hope to inspire your readers?
It’s nice that I sometimes inspire my readers but I don’t think it’s really necessary to inspire other people with my blog.  I just hope they like what I’m doing.  I think among style bloggers it’s often the case that we appreciate each others’ personal styles even if they aren’t our own.  Essentially we just want to see what we’re all wearing.

4. Outside the realm of fashion who/what inspires you?
The weather.  No, seriously.  Whenever it rains I want to wear neon in protest.  Also photography, especially nature and wildlife.  Almost every day I go around and take photos constantly with my iPhone or Fred or my old Sony, whatever I have.  And I don’t know if they’re for inspiration or if the photographer in me just sees beauty everywhere.  Usually I just forget about them until I’m browsing the camera roll on the train or something.  All the photos in this post are iPhone photos taken in the past few months (bonus points if you can figure out exact locations).

5. And since Idol is ending… Which songs inspire you?
…I have no idea what’s going on with American Idol right now, I totally haven’t watched that since Kelly Clarkson.  Right now Queen, Adele, Lissie, and Florence And The Machine feature heavily on my playlist.  Along with some Stevie Wonder, Soft Cell, Steely Dan, and Gin Blossoms sprinkled in.

My Hair Needs A Professional Stylist Every Day

10.18.10 – Monday – Salon

I finally got the ends of my hair cleaned up, I wanted to wait on cutting it until after the formal events for the fall season but that puts me at mid-December for the next cut… not exactly ideal.  But I don’t think I can wait until after the winter holidays, it will probably look very scraggly!

Lately I’ve been… I don’t know what to call it… getting back to my roots?  Wearing a lot of black, lace, really feeling matte sequins.  Okay, so when I started exploring fashion a lot more in high school matte sequins may not have existed… but black, dramatic pieces did and I promise promise promise to scrounge up some photos or at least some of the pieces I still have from that era!  Then you can all see what kind of a crazy I was (am).

Silver Evening

10.16.10 – Saturday – Fall Wedding

Look at all those leaves!  I guess I’m going to have to rake them up soon.  I really miss jumping into huge leaf piles, I used to do that a lot when I was younger (and of course in college… usually at 2am…).  I last wore this dress to a gala in June and I had it lifted at the shoulder since then.  I think it fits much better now!  I should really have 60% of my clothing altered but unfortunately only about 20% really ends up going to the tailor.  So that would mean that 80% fits improperly (oops).

I’ve finally broken out the cape!  Except that now it’s really too cold for the cape, and just about a week ago it was to hot.  There was a skip of an entire temperature range… the range for cape weather.  I actually wanted to wear a longer coat with sleeves but it squashed my dress, so appearance won over comfort as usual :)  Luckily I don’t tend to overheat or freeze easily, I think I must have some kind of superhuman internal temperature regulation system or something!

Black Tie Optional + Victor Victoria

6.5.2010 Saturday

Jessica of What I Wore issued another challenge!  I don’t know if it will be posted – I sent my photo at like 9pm because I thought the deadline was in the evening like the previous challenges but it’s actually 11:59am… oh well, I definitely wouldn’t have made the deadline anyway today because of work.  I had so much fun with the last challenge, but the best part was connecting with other bloggers, especially on tumblr!  Sometime soon I’m going to make up a post about the tumblr bloggers!  Maybe some of you guys don’t know about each other yet!

Saturday I attended the Annual Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival Gala.  I suppose now I’m an actual patron of the arts.  And a tiny bit closer to becoming a philanthropist (my life’s goal).  One day I hope to be able to give serious money to causes I find worthy but for now I have to content myself with being a minor donor.  The Gala was black tie optional and it’s usually the case that most men wear tuxedos so I wasn’t really content with wearing one of the dresses from my, errr… sorority formal days.  Luckily I came across this dress at Lord and Taylor (after hours of despair at Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, where apparently black tie optional dresses are no longer carried).  I think it has good rewearability too!  It’s an option for a wedding I’m attending this weekend — an additional option post is coming soon!
