Getting Lost in the Park

The black dress appears again! This is not really one of my better or more interesting looks. I just decided on something easy. And I’m notorious for wearing sleeveless things even in the dead of winter. I’m not really in a park– it’s Stuyvesant Town. Stuyvesant Town is a pretty old development so the trees are very tall, like in all the older parks in New York. Hardly any of the city is visible, so it barely even feels like Manhattan. It’s interesting to step off the street and immediately be somewhere so quiet.

And okay, seriously… you see all those green trees? It’s barely even fall. But yeah, these photos are from October.

Later on after I got lost in the park I met Nnenna to take some photos before having pho for dinner. We went inside the courtyard of St. Mark’s Church. It’s not a high traffic area and a good place for a photoshoot.

On Alex: London Fog trench, Alexander Wang dress, Target boots, Martine’s Dream scarf (Brooklyn Flea), Longchamp bag.

On Nnenna: Target Trench and Tights, Forever 21 Dress (underneath), Steve Madden Flats, Lulu’s Bag.

Other ways I’ve worn this dress:

The Cove

Well look what I found during my recent journeys around New York.

All this time, and I had no idea Stuyvesant Cove Park was such a nice place to go.

There are even some well-cared for gardens. Berries on the bushes are one of the only visible signs that it’s fall in New York.

And there’s even a tiny beach. I would have gone down, but I don’t think I would have been able to get back up. One must leap the fence.

Gap blazer, H&M dress, LOFT belt, MIA (DSW.com) shoes, Longchamp bag.

City of Letters

Just a short post for today, I’ll be back with something a bit better tomorrow. If you follow me on Instagram (alexshook), you know that I’ve really been getting around New York. I’ve been in Williamsburg twice in the past month and DUMBO for the first time. I really can’t believe I’d never been in Brooklyn Bridge Park before.

I’ve been spending more time in Alphabet City as well. I don’t know how I’d never been there before last month either, especially because it’s so close to my neighborhood. It’s quite a good place to wander around, especially on a Sunday after a jaunt to Brooklyn Flea. Only one stop on the L.

It’s officially coat season in New York. London Fog trench, J.Crew blouse and skirt, Cole Haan shoes, Longchamp bag.

Hello, My Name is Zelda

Happy Halloween! I intended on being a flapper or a witch… and ended up with Zelda Fitzgerald. I do wish I had photos that were a bit clearer because this is definitely a favorite costume, but we were kind of having this little problem over the weekend.

…so that was a no on photos outside. Although I would have braved it if not for the wind. I’ve had the tripod blown over before and my 35mm lens has the scars to prove it.

I didn’t really have any adornment for my hair so I put a necklace in it, an idea I got from The Vintage Valley.

I’m very glad I had an apartment party to attend. Changed my boots for heels when I got there. The pile of snow gear in the corner kept growing as more guests arrived.

Everything for this costume came out of my closet… so does that make it a costume or some craziness I would normally wear? I should wear it to the speakeasy one night.

Donna Morgan dress (gift), scarf from Turkey (gift from cousin), Seychelles shoes, Talbots glass pearls, necklace from Brooklyn Flea (in hair), bracelet from India (gift from friends). And Target boots in the corner for the snow.

Twilight on the East Side

October 8, 2011

Actually these might have been taken at sunset as it’s difficult to tell when the sun sets in Manhattan. On the west side it’s easier, but past 5th Avenue the tall buildings cast long shadows and it can seem dark at 4pm.

You’ve seen this before of course, during fashion week. I made a few changes, adding ankle boots and I carried a clutch instead of my giant bag. There’s no clutch in these photos although there is a photo of it somewhere in my instagram feed.

Have you noticed that I’m basically in the same exact pose in every single photos? Oops. This skirt has pockets but it looks really weird with my hands in them. Lydia told me that instead of putting her whole hand in the pocket she sometimes just uses a thumb. Genius!

J.Crew blouse, Gap skirt (vintage? from Tokyo Joe in the East Village), MIA boots (DSW.com), ken + dana ring, random bangles.

Flowers for Fall

October 7, 2011

Sorry for going dark here since Monday. I feel like every electronic thing I own has broken or needed repairs lately. Just got a new battery for my Mac today, thankfully it’s still under warranty. I updated Aperture 3 (my image editing software) and it doesn’t work very well any more so my photos have been languishing on the hard drive. Also, if you follow me on Twitter you know that something’s up with my iPhone.

Is Mercury in retrograde right now? For serious, I don’t know what is going on.

Wearing my new-to-me Velvet wrap (swapped with Lydia), Free People dress, MIA ankle boots, Foley + Corinna bag, and ken + dana ring.

Breakfast at T. J. Maxx

Yesterday morning I attended T. J. Maxx’s Buyer for a Day at the store in Flatiron.

Over breakfast, Alison Deyette talked to us about what buyers do at Marshalls and
T. J. Maxx, and how they’re different from buyers for other stores. She also showed us some fall trends buyers are currently picking up– keep an eye out for boots of all kinds, statement necklaces, and sweater dresses in unexpected shapes.
Alison Deyette shows us some fall trends.
We learned about how Marshalls and T. J. Maxx work directly with designers to stock current, in-season merchandise at up to 60% off. Buyers for Marshalls and T. J. Maxx stores buy an astonishing 40 weeks of the year, not just at times when seasonal collections become available. I also never knew that by working directly with designers, buyers are able to obtain colors sold exclusively at Marshalls and T. J. Maxx stores.

We also covered the principles of Fashion-Quality-Brand-Price. Buyers use these principles to provide on trend, first quality merchandise from brands customers know at up to 60% savings vs. department stores.
