Here Comes The Flood Again

10 March 2011

So yeah, you can see in the background that everything was basically underwater when it rained last week.  My hair got a bit damp and started to curl so I think it looks sort of vintage in these photos.  They got a hold of me while I was in Sephora and I ended up testing the Temptu and having my eye makeup redone.  It always looks so much better when someone does it for me… wish I could stop into Sephora and have that done every day!  I liked the Temptu but I feel like I look a little too made up in these photos, what do you think?  Can you tell the difference?

P.S.  I swear a lot of time actually passed from the last photos and when I wore this shirt again.  I’ve been mildly obsessed with it lately.

Edit:  Also Happy St. Patrick’s Day!  I’m wearing green!

And this is for real what I looked like all day.  Totally hiding under the umbrella as much as possible because the rain was blowing sideways.  There was really no escaping it.

Weekend Boring

5 March 2011

Really, the only reason I got dressed on this particular Sunday was to take some close up photos for the internship’s blog.  And to go to the store.  I needed allergy medicine and almond milk.  This is pretty typical weekend wear for me though: no belt, no sweater, no extra pieces.  A sort of stripped down version of what I often wear during the week.

J.Crew shirt, Express skirt, Commando tights (I could be wrong though, they might have been HUE), Sofft shoes, b-side by ken + dana ring and bracelet.

Last of February

27 feb 2011

I’m so glad it’s going to be spring soon.  At the first sign of better weather I brought out my nude pumps.  I’ve missed them so much!  I’ve been wanting to try this with a scarf for a while although I think it would have been better with a sleeveless shirt or as part of a beach cover up or something… next time!  Also, I actually bought pants!  Well, sort of.  These are cargo jeggings, but since they’re like stretchy twill would that make them… tweggings?

FBFF & Winter Outerwear: Belted Coat

This week for FBFF Katy says:
Finding the balance – I think this is one of the hardest things for us as bloggers to deal with. How do you do it all and still live, work and play as you should?
1. When it comes to prioritizing your life, in what place does blogging fall?
Blogging is important to me but I do occasionally skip posting if I’m really pressed for time.  I like to keep up with blogs and social media because I do digital media (sales & marketing dept.) for a jewelry company.  It’s important for me to be on the cutting edge of what’s happening on the web, so I feel like I can sometimes push off other things in order to do blog things.

2. We all wish we had more free time to dedicate to blogging and all it entails. What are your tricks for taking advantage of the time you do have to be as productive as possible?
I do multiple things at once whenever I’m on a computer… which actually isn’t the case when I’m not doing work on a computer.  When I’m writing posts for my blog I’m usually also reading other blogs, editing photos, online shopping, gchatting people, responding to emails, playing Tiny Wings on my phone, watching Bones, cooking, eating…

3. Have you discovered any short-cuts that makes blogging easier or more time efficient?
I always queue posts for the next day, usually for 10am.  I also try to reply to comments on my phone when I have a little time.  I’ve tried to reply with email but I don’t think it works.  That would probably help me though so I should try it again!

4. Do you have an editorial calendar or something similar that helps you plan ahead?
I have a rough schedule that I’m trying out, posting Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Friday.  Before I joined FBFF I used to post Monday/Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday, which is still my favorite schedule.  Although I do have a rough idea of when I’ll post photos

5. If time wasn’t an issue what you would be doing on your blog/for your blog that you aren’t doing now?
I would probably read more blogs actually, not do anything more with my blog.  I’m always lamenting that I don’t even have enough time for the blogs I read now and I think I only follow between 100 and 150 blogs total.  There are so many great blogs I wish I had time to read daily or even weekly!

26 Feb 2011

I don’t have a lot of photos from this day because I was running out somewhere and it was a little dark and cloudy.  These are from so long ago that snow was on the ground.  Sorry, time management and all (that’s why this post is a two-for-one!).  I’ve been less good with posting on my schedule lately.

I’ve been very into black and navy lately, not exactly sure why.  This is one of my lightest winter coats and I actually wear it most in October and March… not exactly the dead of winter!  My other winter outwear posts are VintageSnow FallingThree Old FavoritesSnowstorm of the Week, and Black and White.  Soon hopefully I’ll be posting about spring outerwear?  If the rain lets up!

Back to the Beginning

24 Feb 2011

I feel as if these photos are particularly timely today after Jessica of What I Wore’s post yesterday on “flattering” and the pressure to dress to impress (the comments on that post are great).  I still post photos that I’m not too happy with and outfits I don’t think are anything particularly great because let’s be honest, I am not a fashion magazine editor.  And that’s not what this blog is about, although that doesn’t mean I can’t love what Kate Lanphear and Anna Dello Russo wear.

This outfit is typical of days when I don’t do a lot of styling or am seeking something comfortable and unfussy.  Nothing really special or fashion-forward (I think I’m still a bit of a minimalist at heart).  I started this blog on outfits that look a lot like this one:  little dresses with belts and (usually) tights in a different color.  I’ve managed a lot of evolution since then but I think sometimes it’s not a bad idea to get back to your roots.

Announcing Black and White Week!

A little while ago, Lydia of Chic on the Cheap and I discovered we had something in common– a love of black and white photos!  For this reason we decided to devote an entire week to posting our photos in black and white.  Join us if you love black and white photography too!

Black and White Week officially starts on Monday, March 21st (but if you post on the weekend feel free to start then too)!

Everybody Everywear: Polka Dots

8 Mar 2011

I photographed this earlier, I’m in New York and probably won’t start taking photos outside until April (warmer, less layers to shed outside).  I haven’t worn this skirt in a while and I don’t really know why.  The only thing I don’t like about this skirt is its tendency to end up in odd lines (see above).  I used to wear it a lot last spring though, maybe it’s just one of those pieces that needed a temporary retirement and is back now?  I haven’t worn this shirt in a while either… I guess I just wanted to pull out some things that at one time were in heavy rotation in my closet.

This is my first time taking part in Everybody Everywear.  I can’t wait to see everyone’s polka dots!

I Think It’s The Shoes

20 Feb 2011

So I don’t totally love this outfit…  I think it’s the shoes.  I expected them to blend in with the navy tights (worn with the help of Spanx) a little bit more, but… they didn’t.  I should have probably dug up some brown sandals or something, no matter if they would have been slightly ridiculous with snow still on the ground.

I wore this to go do some general running around.  And then I just suddenly happened to be in the Coach store.  I did receive a really good discount from them in the mail ($100 off $300 or more) so I just wanted to look around and see the spring collection.  They pressure you a lot to buy things though, and that really makes me not want to go to the store.  I was also so surprised that no one in the store could recognize a vintage Coach bag.  I guess Coach has changed a lot since I was younger and they’ve done a lot of rebranding.  I think they’re losing touch with their classic look… which makes me sad.

Change in seasons has been wreaking havoc with my sinuses so I have such dark undereye circles now, I didn’t walk into a wall or something.  But I’m enjoying the clear sidewalks for the first time in a long time and I hope you are too!

The Beauty Side of FBFF

I really never do posts on beauty, but beauty products are near and dear to my heart.  Sephora is like my second home, although lately I find myself wearing less and less makeup.  Answering these FBFF questions made me realize how much eyeshadow I have and how little I wear it.  Maybe I’ll start snapping a photo of my eyeshadow every day to encourage me to use the products I already have instead of buying more (always a problem every time I step into a Sephora).

1.  What’s your favorite drug store makeup product and your favorite higher-end product?

Drug Store: Revlon Age Defying Concealer.  For the price it’s absolutely amazing, comparable to YSL Touche Eclat.  I usually buy it at Target or Ulta but right now it’s available on Ulta.com buy two get one free!
Higher-end: NARS eyeshadows.  I’ve been collecting seasonal colors since high school but my mainstay is the Earth Angel color duo.

2.  Is there one type of product that is your go-to, can’t live without?

Foundation, specifically DiorSkin foundations.  I’ve mentioned before that my skin tone is really uneven (like huge disparity between my cheeks and the rest of my face) and DiorSkin manages to even me out a bit but still look natural.  I’ve been thinking of switching to YSL though lately because I have a feeling their foundations would
match my skin tone better.  YSL foundations have more golden tones.

3. What’s the best hair product you’ve ever used?

Living Proof Straight Making No Frizz Styling Treatment for Thick to Coarse Hair.  Better than any other product for frizz/straightening I’ve ever had, and I’ve been through most of Sephora’s stock over the past 10 years.  As with any product, I don’t mind paying for it as long as it actually works.

4. Fess up, what’s the worst beauty look you’ve tried to rock and look back at now with a little shame or apprehension that you actually did that?

Blue glitter gel eyeshadow.  No, seriously.  It was the 90s, okay?  And I was eleven… don’t worry, I graduated to neutral shimmers at twelve.

5. When it comes to beauty products, we all use the same basic products. What do you use that helps show off your personal flare and personality?

….I have no idea.  I like red lipstick?  But a lot of people like red lipstick.  I’d really like to get those feather hair extensions, actually.  I love them but they’re $20/feather and they’re just clip-ins so I don’t think they’re worth it, maybe if the price comes down.
Also, my hair gets more curl when it’s longer so I often let it go curly then.  Right now it’s too short and doesn’t have much of a curl so I’m hoping to grow it longer this year, I miss the curls!

Feeling Blustery

So remember when I talked about trying to cheer myself up when I’m feeling blah?  These photos were taken on one of those days.  It all started with me trying to wear these navy Merona/Target tights I picked up a few weeks ago.  They were on sale and they felt like good quality (they’re from the Premium line).  I had been wanting navy tights so I bought them.  Also, people seem to like the tights at Target a lot.

I bought S/M because my height and weight put me firmly in that size, but I definitely should have bought M/L or just gone with We Love Colors.  If you have a small waist I highly recommend them, the Merona tights should work perfectly for you.  And I will say that they’re good quality because they’re thick and feel like they would hold up well.  But if I want to wear them I’ll have fit some Spanx underneath.

Anyway, I was feeling blahhhhh raaarrrr these are too small but just want to wear my navy tights!  But I decided to change them out for black opaques, my favorites.  And then I said to myself: self, this is nothing you can’t fix by pulling your Rodarte for Target dress and some three inch heels.  Who cares if you’ll be sleeveless in 34 degree weather, you’re the only one that might be cold.  And then out into the blustery weather I went.  I had to take photos, of course.

And when I came back in I had a few spoonfulls of almond butter and a raw Pillsbury Valentine’s cookie just for good measure.

And I certainly felt a bit more cheery.

That last photo is almost normal.  The rest are totally windblown!
