Dear Lydia,
I hope you have a safe and happy holiday weekend, and may you remember fondly anyone you have lost.

Dear Laura,
I hope you had a nice weekend! Usually I leave the city for other pastures, this year a tiny beach town.
I wore my crazy maxi dress on July 4th because the pattern actually reminds me of fireworks. What do you think? Festive? I usually wear blue and white on Independence Day along with my brightest red lipstick. It was both hot and extremely windy on the 4th, so this is my only halfway decent photo. My hair is blowing around like crazy!
I carried my 5D around a lot over the weekend, so I took a ton of photos. Lately I haven’t been taking so many (or tagging my camera along) and I think I may have actually been suffering from withdrawal. Need to remember to take more photos! …

Another day, another year… they really do seem to fly away faster with each passing year. I spent the day wandering the old neighborhood with my roommate, dreaming of apartments on the border of the West Village and Chelsea, and walked by my house. I tried to go to Magnolia for a New Year’s cupcake but the line was out the door and around the block. I didn’t want one quite that much. …

Happy Independence Day! I know, I haven’t been around much. I’ve been without internet for part of the week and I’m getting ready to be a bridesmaid in just a few days… it feels strange for my friends to be married. I did a hair and makeup test with the bride this morning and learned that my hair is definitely still too short for hot rollers. It was somewhere between hugely puffy and completely out of control. …

Over the weekend my cousins came to visit and we did some touristy things. I usually only see the tree as I walk through on my way to Anthropologie. I don’t like the touristy areas of Manhattan… they aren’t really New York to me, although I did take a few good photos.
Then I took them to Flatiron, Union Square, and the East Village. They’d never been, which I can’t even imagine… they’re among my favorite neighborhoods in New York. I wanted to get them to Brooklyn as well, but there wasn’t time. Oh well, guess they’ll just have to visit again!
Do you have any fun holiday plans with friends or family?

If you’ve been following my Instagram feed then you know that Nnenna and I stopped in at Coach, where they were serving up champagne, sparkling water, and tiny desserts. The Man Repeller arrived just after I did, although I have to say I didn’t think her outfit was really man repelling.

Worn on 25 Dec 2010 – Christmas
It was almost a white Christmas! This is the most casual thing I’ve worn for Christmas in years… well actually last year I might have worn black denim. But usually I’m fond of dresses. Although my ideal Christmas (and winter in general) outfit would be a long plaid skirt with maybe a white or red blouse. I want to wear that sometime in my life, even if it might be a long time coming!
Sorry for slow posting, and I’m also 200+ blog posts behind in reading. If you haven’t heard a peep from me that’s why! A less than ideal social schedule for blogging lately… :(
Anthropologie sweater, J.Crew blouse (underneather), J.Crew skirt, Assets tights, Sofft shoes.
Oh, also, guess where— same location 25Dec and 26Dec…
Welcome to Letters from the City, a lifestyle photoblog.
My name is Alex and I have been blogging in some form or another since 1998. I’m a former Manhattanite now living the quieter life in Brooklyn. I like outerwear and red lipstick.
When I was younger, I was let loose in a GAP Kids one too many times, resulting in many of the fashion choices you see here in my photos. I also read, traveled, and took cooking and art classes. Art eventually led me around to photography, and to this day I do enjoy a good brunch.
Thank you for visiting! I hope you'll stay a while and get to know me. Learn More →
