Photos and thoughts on fashion, beauty, tech + city living.

A breezy, beachy weekend filled with food and sand. I always appreciate time to travel and spend outdoors during the summer. Only thing you have to worry about is the sunburn. I’m out of my favorite Neutrogena Dry-Touch, but a while ago I got a sample of Supergoop’s mineral sunscreen in a gift bag and it worked well for me.
I had a serious red, white and blue theme going on… so much that during the day I even wore pink lipstick instead of my usual red. For a lot of occasions I do like pink more than red during the summer. Pink always seems more fresh and modern to me on a hot summer day.
Hope you enjoy all of my photos!

Dear Mia,
I hope you’re having a fantastic summer! The past few days have been very hot, and today was exceptionally rainy. It’s been very nice lately, though, so I can’t complain.
Summer is supposed to be a time for a bit of relaxation, but it seems as if there’s always so much to do. Run here, run there… I’m consciously trying to plan the next few months so that I’m not even more worn out by the end of September. I think I need the rest.
The next few photos are from a beach trip. And may or may not include a puppy.

Summer is here, and that means frequent trips to escape the city heat! My beach bag is always filled with tech (to keep me occupied) and beauty (sun protection!) products, and of course a great pair of summery sandals. Check out my beachy summer favorites below!

Dear Laura,
I hope you had a nice weekend! Usually I leave the city for other pastures, this year a tiny beach town.
I wore my crazy maxi dress on July 4th because the pattern actually reminds me of fireworks. What do you think? Festive? I usually wear blue and white on Independence Day along with my brightest red lipstick. It was both hot and extremely windy on the 4th, so this is my only halfway decent photo. My hair is blowing around like crazy!
I carried my 5D around a lot over the weekend, so I took a ton of photos. Lately I haven’t been taking so many (or tagging my camera along) and I think I may have actually been suffering from withdrawal. Need to remember to take more photos! …

Dear Shen Dove,
I picked this Tracy Negoshian dress up downtown at Aquamarine at 114. It has a doozy of a pattern. Next time I need to take a head-to-toe photo and show you. …

Dear Mia,
You may (of course) recognize this photo as one lately from Instagram that’s been put through the A Beautiful Mess app. Among the great benefits of the coast are the sunsets… and the storm clouds to keep them interesting. This one is straight out of the Camera+ app. The ability to set exposure is such an important part of iPhoneography for me. Keep reading for more (non-Instagrammed) photos from my weekend! …

I wore this dress to my friend’s beautiful wedding on the beach (congratulations!). I got it at Anthropologie in December with the wedding in mind, but I feel like it’s going to be one of my forever pieces. It has a classic cut and the print will never go out of style during the warmer months of the year.
I might even wear it to fashion week in a few days. Dare I? It might be a little unseasonable for February in New York… …

Welcome to Letters from the City, a lifestyle photoblog.
My name is Alex and I have been blogging in some form or another since 1998. I’m a former Manhattanite now living the quieter life in Brooklyn. I like outerwear and red lipstick.
When I was younger, I was let loose in a GAP Kids one too many times, resulting in many of the fashion choices you see here in my photos. I also read, traveled, and took cooking and art classes. Art eventually led me around to photography, and to this day I do enjoy a good brunch.
