It’s a commonly held myth that I never wear pants. I do. I swear. Let it be documented that I do wear pants (even if they’re always skinny jeans).
I tend to dress for dinner during the holidays, though no one else in my family does. However, there usually is an occasional very casual dinner or post-dinner drinks with good friends and neighbors, and I’d be more likely to dress up some denim for that. I always wear a fancier top, heels, and some big jewelry. I like this necklace from AMY O. because it’s glittery yet understated. …

Holiday party season is definitely upon us and I can’t think of anything better to wear than a feather headband and oxblood tights (well, I might make an exception for vintage Balenciaga). I’ve been sporting this pretty little headband from Sproos lately. It’s a great holiday piece– festive, fun, and just the right size to make a statement. …

This outfit is a combination of pieces I’ve collected over about the past fifteen years, the oldest being the vintage bracelets. I really like having pieces with history and things that have been around for a while. Sometimes I think it makes them seem more mine. …

I think photos at night can be pretty fantastic, especially with a city behind you. Just have to find the right light (or bring an assistant with your own). That’s the Queensboro bridge behind me, which I haven’t really shown like this before. It’s probably even better at sunset.

So I took these photos a little bit ago, as you can see by the green leaves. These were pre-hurricane and now there are hardly any leaves left to turn yellow. Hoping there will be a nicer fall all around next year.
I mean, everyone wears T by Alexander Wang to go forest bathing, right? Everything is so soft and wonderful that I don’t see why not.
If you’re a fan of gourmet chocolates don’t forget about my Epiphany Chocolates giveaway for a $25 gift card and 18 piece box of seasonal fall chocolates!

Union Square is one of my favorite places in New York. I know not all New Yorkers feel that way, but there’s just something about the area that seems so alive. And DSW and Forever 21 are there, of course. I’m always up for a good game of chicken with New York traffic, and the small side streets east of Union Square Park aren’t nearly as busy as the others. Easier to take photos in the street.

I don’t know how there can be so many leaves on the ground and so many leaves left on the trees. It’s like the opposite of the sock eating laundry monster. Where did they all come from?

I pretty much bolted out of New York with jeans, a trench coat and my computers… so my outfits lately have been interesting. Why yes, I’ll wear this hot house floral dress when it’s 40 degrees and dropping. I made no tights until November, though! These are the first tights of the season. Black, of course, although they reverse to grey. Good move on Sara Blakely’s part. …

As you know, I escaped New York last week before the storm. I did not want to go. Even with the threat of power outages. New York is truly not as dangerous as it used to be, and I am old definitely enough to remember it when it was unsafe. But the evacuation order was given and my father (who did live through a blackout in the city) asked me to leave twice. It’s probably better as my building is kind of flooded. Uncomfortable to think that if I return tomorrow I will have nowhere to live.
Still, I feel oddly like I abandoned my city. I haven’t felt much like blogging. Been a bit sad. I tried to cheer myself up by picking up some winter clothing at the local mall the other day, but I don’t think it worked. I may have to go again. I’ll need some warmer things to wear anyway. I don’t have anything but summer clothing here. …
Welcome to Letters from the City, a lifestyle photoblog.
My name is Alex and I have been blogging in some form or another since 1998. I’m a former Manhattanite now living the quieter life in Brooklyn. I like outerwear and red lipstick.
When I was younger, I was let loose in a GAP Kids one too many times, resulting in many of the fashion choices you see here in my photos. I also read, traveled, and took cooking and art classes. Art eventually led me around to photography, and to this day I do enjoy a good brunch.
