Guess who again! It’s always nice to have victims to practice your photography skills on. That’s obviously why I’m always pestering Nnenna to do things. Oh yeah, you’re free? Let’s go eat dumplings… and then I can practice doing night photography take photos of you for your blog! Although on this particular occasion it was let’s sit in the park and eat doughnut holes after we’re done running around with the camera….

Always a challenge to shoot directly into a sunset. I feel like I get it right about 50% of the time, and the other 50 is a complete disaster. Can barely see what I’m wearing, too. I promise you it’s all opaque black except for the wrapped and tied Francesca’s cardigan, which is a little sheer. …

Oh look, I’m here again. I love this area. Forget Central Park. Although it’s very nice, Brooklyn Bridge Park wins every time. The water has the best view, but I like the park part past the bridge as well. I’ll have to venture there and show you one day. …

I have made an incredible discovery. I have found a natural habitat for style bloggers: Brooklyn Bridge Park at the golden hour.
I thought I might go down by the water, put my camera on the steps, and take some photos. However, I immediately realized it would not be possible. All over Brooklyn Bridge Park there are people with tripods. Everywhere. I’ve never seen so many shutterbugs out at once (except maybe at blogger events). …

I don’t know what is it about this striped shirt, but I like it and wear it far more often than my black and white Ann Taylor one. I think I like that the stripes are actually navy and not black, and that it has a different shape than most striped shirts I see.
As you know, I’m an intern at an environmentally friendly jewelry designer here in New York, so I was eager to put some of my jewelry inspecting skills to the test when Anjolee offered me a necklace for review. Anjolee specializes in custom made diamond jewelry and Anjolee diamonds are never treated or enhanced. They’re also Kimberley Process compliant (an industry standard conflict-free certification). …

The days are definitely getting longer now, but I’d forgotten how quickly the sun disappears and lost the golden hour after only a few photos. That’s okay though, because soon photos will be possible as late as dinner time!
I wore something very similar to this outfit when Lydia came to visit for the first time (I can’t even look at those photos, bare legs– sob). I’m sort of in the middle of the fashion blogger version of the existential crisis (what is the purpose of red tights? do I even like taking photos any more or is it just habit?), so naturally I put on something that I thought might alleviate said crisis. Leather, of course, black, and apparently grey semi-opaque Swiss dot tights.
I feel most like myself when I wear black leather and crazy Helmut Lang coats, but I’d really like to add some pieces in bright solid colors for spring. I don’t know what I was doing last spring, but… I was feeling uninspired.
I’m wearing my Helmut Lang coat (out of stock, but there were tons floating around at the sample sale so there must be some around), Francesca’s Collections wrap/cardigan with a J.Crew shell underneath, Gap leather skirt (Tokyo Joe – East Village), Merona/Target Swiss dot tights, and MIA booties (DSW).

Merry Christmas! So I got a new lens, but I’m still obviously adjusting to it because none of my photos are properly focused. I don’t think I can shoot wide open at ƒ1.4 unless I’m holding the camera. The bokeh is completely amazing though, I’m really enjoying it.
I walked down to the lake with my cousin and her dog to take photos. I tried, but Max didn’t want to pose with me and kept running away. It started to rain while we were out there, too, but I was so far from the house that I kept taking photos because I was definitely getting rained on anyway.
Of course, it stopped as soon as I got inside.
I’m wearing my vintage Betsey Johnson dress, Helmut Lang coat (Christmas gift!), Target belt, Assets by Sara Blakely tights, and Stuart Weitzman shoes.
Hope you’re having a wonderful holiday!

Welcome to Letters from the City, a lifestyle photoblog.
My name is Alex and I have been blogging in some form or another since 1998. I’m a former Manhattanite now living the quieter life in Brooklyn. I like outerwear and red lipstick.
When I was younger, I was let loose in a GAP Kids one too many times, resulting in many of the fashion choices you see here in my photos. I also read, traveled, and took cooking and art classes. Art eventually led me around to photography, and to this day I do enjoy a good brunch.
Thank you for visiting! I hope you'll stay a while and get to know me. Learn More →
