I don’t know how there can be so many leaves on the ground and so many leaves left on the trees. It’s like the opposite of the sock eating laundry monster. Where did they all come from?

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for spring weather. I actually love winter (snow!) but this rainy in-between freezing and temperate just has me in a fog. Hoping for better weather next week, and maybe an actual spring? Last year I remember wearing raincoats for at least two months straight… and then it exploded into ninety degree weather in the last days of May. It seems like there are hardly any seasons any more, just extreme weather. …

I’ve been doing a lot of sunset photography in addition to all the night photos we’ve been taking over the past few weeks. I love when it’s a little bit cloudy and all the colors are more vibrant… probably because I always seem to be wearing black when there’s a pretty sunset around. But this was a cloudless, clear day, so there’s only a hint of gold and pink. …

Man Repelling like a champion, I know (at least that’s what my friend said one of the last times I wore this skirt). Obviously I still wear it anyway. It’s a crazy skirt, I know, but bloggers are totally obligated to wear crazy things, right? And I don’t really care if people stare at it… it’s a great statement piece. …

Every. Winter. I tell myself that I’m going to wear this scarf more often. And of course it never happens, so this winter (really, I swear) it’s going to happen. This scarf is warm and cozy… and kind of obnoxiously large, but I like it. It deserves to be worn.
Last time I wore this scarf it was with grey and purple and Anthropologie. I guess I need to branch out! Color next time, for sure.
I’m wearing my J.Crew lady day coat, Anthropologie Plaited Illusion Cardi, Target dress (old- spring 2011), Betsey Johnson tights, and Born boots (brown). And these are new Anthropologie gloves, but they’re no longer available.

Guess who! Shivani came to visit and we took some typically bizarre photos. I don’t really know what we were doing either. It was cold and sometimes we are very silly. It’s what happens when you’ve been friends for nearly twenty years.
I’ve been feeling really minimalist lately, but I think this outfit is just boring, ugh. I have to work on my minimalist-yet-interesting looks. I’m wearing a J.Crew coat, MM couture dress, Talbots scarf, Cole Haan gloves, and Born boots (still available in brown).

It was such a crazily windy day, even sheltered by the apartments in Stuyvesant Town. I can’t believe there are still leaves on the trees in this neighborhood! And I found a late-blooming rose, too.
My hair and my H&M dress were blowing all over the place. This is my new Target belt, too, and the Born boots, Longchamp tote, and J.Crew coat you’ve seen a million times now.
Happy Christmas Eve! I hope all your Christmas wishes come true.

Brooklyn Bridge Park really is one of the best spots in New York, and Shivani had never been so I hopped us over on the F train. Despite the gloom and insane wind it was an unbelievably warm day. In between trains passing through, DUMBO is a quiet neighborhood and I like taking people out of areas that are seen as typically New York. Part of the beauty of this city is the amazing amount of different experiences you can have– sometimes all of them in one day!
Shivani left New York in the early evening and I met Nnenna for some shopping in Flatiron. At 8pm it was still warm enough for dinner outside at Shake Shack, an awesome treat this late in the season. I thought the everyone would have the same idea to dine al fresco one more time before winter sets in, but there were only about five people in line before us. Totally unbelievable, considering I’ve seen an hour long wait during the spring downpours we had earlier in the year.
I’m wearing my Simply Vera for Kohl’s jacket, Francesca’s Collections cardigan, Alexander Wang dress, Assets by Sara Blakely tights, and Born boots. And of course carrying my favorite old Foley + Corinna bag.
Hope you have lots of fun things planned for the holidays! I have lots of traveling to do this week.

It seems like I’m always taking people to Central Park these days, although it doesn’t look quite as nice as it did when Lydia visited. Shivani and I went up for a walk before the Steve Madden party and shared a giant ginger snap at the little market in Columbus Circle. Maybe one day I can take you here, too?
I’m wearing a vintage necklace, ken + dana ring, Old Navy shirt, Gap leather skirt, Target belt, Born boots, and Assets by Sara Blakely tights. And I’m carrying my J.Crew coat and Foley + Corinna bag.

Welcome to Letters from the City, a lifestyle photoblog.
My name is Alex and I have been blogging in some form or another since 1998. I’m a former Manhattanite now living the quieter life in Brooklyn. I like outerwear and red lipstick.
When I was younger, I was let loose in a GAP Kids one too many times, resulting in many of the fashion choices you see here in my photos. I also read, traveled, and took cooking and art classes. Art eventually led me around to photography, and to this day I do enjoy a good brunch.
Thank you for visiting! I hope you'll stay a while and get to know me. Learn More →
