Another Day in Monochrome

September 19, 2011

I meant to post this far earlier, but I suppose life got away from me. I’ve kind of been a bad blogger this week. I’ve got tons of blog reading to do too (don’t think I’ve forgotten about you).

This Alexander Wang dress is a fun piece, I’m sort of glad for the capsule wardrobe because I wore it more than I would have with my full wardrobe. I have my favorite American Apparel shirt over it. What do you think, better off the shoulder or on? I couldn’t decide.

I also have my Foley + Corinna bag and Cole Haan shoes again. So tired of these little wedges… I need more variety and so do my heels– blisters!

Other ways I’ve worn this dress:

That’s Just My Crazy Old Aunt…

September 18, 2011

Last Sunday there was a birth in the family, and I expected to be in the delivery room. However, the baby came very suddenly on Sunday morning — the birth was estimated for the afternoon — so I arrived afterwards. And then one of my (so-called) friends informed me that I was man repelling like a champion. That I most emphatically cannot deny.

This baby is going to have way too many crazy aunts.

And I’m pretty sure that everyone in the hospital thought I was a crazy too, considering that I was at New York-Presbyterian/Weil Cornell.

Late Summer Velvet

September 15, 2011

I wanted to take photos in front of this cool building that’s off to my right, but every day there’s a garbage truck and some other kind of industrial size truck parked in front of it. Garbage truck = not pretty, so I moved over closer to the street. People seem to be so curious about big cameras. A lot of people asked me about camera specs and photo quality, and to make sure they weren’t ruining the shot.

This is the dress I picked from the ModSwap. It’s a little early for velvet, but if you hadn’t noticed I’m dealing with a bit of a capsule wardrobe right now. I’m currently switching out summer and winter clothes. After fashion week I expected to leave for my parents’ in the country to switch more, however my schedule got unexpectedly full (birth in the family, etc.) so I never ended up doing that. I’ve been doing a lot of laundry lately.

I’m wearing an American Apparel shirt over a dress c/o ModCloth from the ModSwap, carrying my Foley + Corinna bag, and wearing the Cole Haan shoes again.

Skyline

September 13, 2011

So… okay. This was more like a photography session masquerading as an outfit photoshoot. This is my Target dress that I wear all the time (seen here with Shivani) and my double wrap Ann Taylor Loft belt. Nothing especially thrilling, but they are both favorites.

I was up on my friend’s roof again to take photos… and I forgot it’s getting darker more quickly again. Should have gone up earlier. I sometimes say that I’m really more photographer than blogger (yeah, sorry about the load time) and this is an instance when that’s very true– who cares about the outfit, let’s just take pictures of New York. It was so windy anyway. Isn’t my hair crazy?

When Lydia Came to Visit

I’m interrupting my usually chronological photos because Lydia’s are already up. And if I post them in order it’ll be next week and I’ll feel like an idiot. Lydia’s write up is much better, and you should look at some of the photos she captured with her wide angle lens!

(Stolen from Lydia.)

Last week Lydia came to New York! We did lots of fun and mostly non-touristy things (I put my foot down at Times Square with a tripod on a Friday night. Just. No.).

Lydia zeroed in on my manicure. I’m starting a new trend. Really.

We went to Central Park because Lydia had never been, and wonder of wonders: I managed not to get us lost. But we didn’t venture any farther uptown than Le Pain Quotidien. Otherwise getting lost would have been a very real possibility because I have no idea where any of those walkways go as soon as they’re past Le Pain.

(Also stolen from Lydia.)

Then we ventured downtown for some shopping, etc. and then we met Nnenna and ate lots of pho!

Spots Again | J.Crew and T by Alexander Wang

September 12, 2011

I have been wearing a lot of leopard lately. It’s definitely my pattern of choice for fall… and it is definitely fall now. I’m pretty much a week behind in photos because fashion week upset my schedule a bit. Last Monday it was actually still 85 degrees out and I remember being hot in this. And wishing for my shirt to stop wrinkling where it meets my skirt.

I couldn’t get to the area with the good view uptown because they were washing windows, so I took these on one of the elevated walkways at Waterside on the East River. While I was there some boys were trying to talk to me from an upper deck– they were wondering what I was doing. I should have handed them business cards but they were too far away.

I’ve gotten so much better at not caring when people talk to me when I’m out taking photos. Most people just stare curiously, but some ask about the camera or to make sure they’re not in the way of photos. It’s probably actually easier to take photos in New York, though. All kinds of other crazy things happen on the street so a tripod with a camera is hardly worth stopping for.

I’m wearing my new J.Crew leopard blouse, T by Alexander Wang skirt, Salvatore Ferragamo heels, and carrying my Foley + Corinna (again).

Saturday Brunch

September 10, 2011

On Saturday (as in last week, sorry, I know) I went to meet my friend Devon, who just graduated from law school and is working in New York now. She snapped a photo of me near Stuyvesant Square and I took this photo of her in Gramercy.

We went to petite abeille and had good things to eat.

We walked by Kate Spade and went to Ann Taylor for the awesome sale (and she had a gift card!!).

Later at night I went to my friend’s apartment and we took some fun photos on her roof.

Hillary Flowers S/S 2012

I went to see Hillary Flowers at the Dream Hotel on September 10th. I’m so happy that I met a great group of people who had some crazy random connections to each other. I really hope we get to connect again soon, especially the New York locals.

It pains me to say it because I’m a huge supporter of local and indie designers, but I had really negative experience. At the door they told me I wasn’t on the list and there was a $10 cover. No luck with asking if they would let me in without it as press because I’m a blogger and spent my last $15 on a taxi getting there. I had to go to an ATM and at that point I would have just left, but I wanted to meet up with Laura again. Laura didn’t have to pay or even give her name so I can’t say I was a fan of the random admission.

I did my research on Hillary Flowers before the show and while the collection is wearable, I was expecting to see pieces that were more unique.

Friday Part Two: Blogger’s Night Out

September 9, 2011

After ModSwap, Nnenna and I grabbed a drink at Bar Breton and then walked over to Pranna, the venue for Blogger’s Night Out. My voice is still recovering from several nights out in a row. I haven’t had a party schedule like this since college!

Feel like a tourist lately… been out near the Empire State Building like five times in a week.

I think that might be the elusive FNO bus?

We visited all the sponsors present at the event and picked up some gifts along the way. I won a Mink Pink leopard maxi skirt from LuLu’s! Also introduced myself to Kimberlee and looked for other bloggers I knew would be there, including Kristen (BonBon Rose Girls). There was a huge turnout and it was so crowded that I actually couldn’t find anyone else. Didn’t even know where to look!

Luckily I located Nnenna and Laura again. Later in the night plopped in a randomly velvet roped-off section with a familiar face and I snagged business cards from made-to-travel and Kendall Donaldson, one of the minds behind Blogger’s Night Out. Hope no one minded my stalker photos again. I try not to take posed photos and bloggers are used to having photos taken.

And last, if you’ve made it this far: the gift bag. ZOYA’s smoke and mirror collections, which are incredible. I painted my toes with one coat. Also included were these sparkly earrings from Send the Trend. We were talking about all styling them up and posting on the same day– let’s make it happen! I originally thought it would be a good visual FBFF, maybe someone can host a show us your earrings post?

Thanks for the photos, Laura! If you’re curious, I wore a giant black sack dress. Okay not really, I just have to learn not to dislike my camera’s flash so much. It’s a Laugh Cry Repeat by AZFN shirt (from the consignment store next to Rag & Bone in SoHo, I forget the name) and T by Alexander Wang skirt.

Lydia visits tomorrow!

ModSwap!

Last Friday night I went to the ModCloth and The Swapaholics Blogger Party! I looked totally out of place in head-to-toe black. Oops. Should have at least worn a circle skirt. It was tons of fun though and I met lots of bloggers!

My mildly paparazzi-ish tendencies caught this awesome print…

… and leopard and hot pink belts!

These last three photos courtesy of the event photographer. Makes me wish I had an external flash! View more on The Swapaholics’ Facebook page.

I swapped two items and picked up one compliments of ModCloth. I also basically pulled a dress off the ModCloth rack, handed it to Nnenna, and said “this is for you” (she ended up leaving with it).

Just before we left for BNO I introduced myself to Tieka with the totally original “I love your blog!”. She’s just as genuine in person as she is on Selective Potential.

Tomorrow will be Blogger’s Night Out! Hope you guys aren’t bored of hearing about fashion week events yet!
