Goth Light + Arm Party

So lately I’ve been thinking that I don’t actually want to wear most of the clothing I have. It’s been taking me forever to get dressed. I don’t know if I’m bored of it, or if I’m growing out of this aesthetic… or if I’m growing back toward the aesthetic I pursued when I first started seriously following fashion. The slightly vintagey look I have now is a result of study abroad in Japan + J.Crew/Ralph Lauren/Anthropologie/Kate Spade influence from college. But I’ve found myself less attracted to the J.Crew and Anthropologie catalogues this year, although I’m a huge fan of Free People August. I still like Kate Spade except the retail prices kill me.

Free People dess, LOFT double wrap belt, Bandolino heels.

I haven’t worn this dress all summer which is odd because it’s always been one of my favorites. It is, however, one of the few pieces that isn’t very cohesive with the rest of my wardrobe. When I brought it out though… I found myself thinking that this is the aesthetic I want to pursue, and stop buying all those Forever 21 dresses that always shrink after one wash no matter how delicately you treat them, and what are you doing with your random turquoise dresses and shoes with little flowers on them because this isn’t really… you. I feel like I’m playing dress up in my clothes, like none of it’s what I actually really wear. And most of you know that if I had $20,000/season for clothing and accessories all of it would be Alexander Wang, Helmut Lang, and Rick Owens with some Céline, YSL, and Ann Demeulemeester thrown in.

So I guess I’m due for a wardrobe update. I’ve always wanted to have a more pulled together style, I’m kind of all over the place.

Ippolita, ken + dana past collection, Dream Weaver by ken + dana, from Thailand (black pearls, gift from cousin), from Budapest (stolen from dad many years ago).

This tangle of bracelets is also my submission for the Bloggers Do It Better Arm Party hosted by Pretty Shiny Sparkly. There are some lovely submissions of bloggers with parties on both arms, but that’s something I’ve never been able to do. I tend to wear bangles and they just get in the way on my right arm so I always take them off before noon. Maybe I’ll get some of those friendship-style bracelets I’ve been seeing lately. They tend to hug the wrist or at least be softer than bangles so I think I’d be able to leave them on.

Love the arm party! I agree with you; I’m much more of a one-arm type girl. To me, having stacks and stacks and oodles and oodles of bracelets on both arms just seems like overkill to me. You actually begin to look styled at that point.

This dress is so pretty on you. I love the shoulders and sleeve detail, and I think you paired just the perfect amount and perfectly right jewelry with it.
I tire easily of my clothing, but the best thing is pulling out something I haven’t worn in a year and seeing it through new/fresh eyes!

The shoulders and sleeves are my favorite part!  They make it hard to wear this dress during the winter though, the sleeves don’t look right under a sweater.  I missed this dress.  I’m glad I brought it out to wear again!

People change and their tastes change, and it’s cool that you realize that about yourself and can make changes to your wardrobe to better suit who you are, even if it’s a little bit at a time. I’m still trying to figure out what excites me about clothing and what my preferred aesthetic is; I feel like I’m all over the place sometimes, and wonder when I’ll become more consistent. This look is really good on you, and I’m excited to see what you’ll be doing with your look if and when you update things. :)

About that update… it’s going down.  Sample sale hahahhaa.  I’m still going to be a bit scattered in terms of style, but I hope to pin down some underlying idea… um, or something… threading together all the clothes I have.  Yeah I don’t know what I’m talking about hahaa.

those are super cute bracelets. Love to see a darker collection, it’s very rare on the BDIB. Love the far left one and the big one in the middle the most!!! Ver pretty take on it.

The idea that someone can actually have a closet full of pieces that they will always love and that will always fatter seems to get thrown around a lot. And the belief that if we could suddenly afford our designer dreams that we’d never look into our closets and think “i have nothing to wear”.

Somehow I don’t think its true. I think no matter how much money, or how many designer pieces are in our closets, there is always going to be that morning when you wake up to stare into the abyss and think, “none of this is me, I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR”.

Or maybe it’s me, trying to comfort myself in the knowledge that i will never have the money or the dream closet. And the fact that when people blather on about investing in a wonderful LBD, I laugh a little. Because there is no way i’d want to wear the same dress over and over again to every important event that comes up in my life.

Free people has been a fave of mine for a while, i almost always love their aesthetic, except for workboots with a chiffon dress. Can’t get behind that.

I think “I have nothing to wear” is a problem even Anna Dello Russo probably faces. And I expect I’d feel that way sometimes even if I did have a closet full of Rick Owens. I have no problem with wearing the same things over and over though. I know it’s not the prevalent line of thinking in the U.S. but it’s of many random things I picked up from my Korean and Japanese friends during study abroad. Before I had a blog I used to wear pieces with much less time between.
