At St. Mark’s Church in-the-Bowery

Dear Shen Dove,

File under: Things I Never Knew About New York. Apparently the church courtyard Nnenna and I are fond of using to take photos is the second-oldest in Manhattan. I didn’t even know it was still used for religious services as the inside’s been totally gutted, leaving it minimalistic, echoing, and white. And the last time we were there it was being used for a concert. …

More Photographer than Blogger

Dear Mia,

Recently I’ve been thinking of making Delayed Missives a little bit more editorial, although literally every person I mentioned it to at IFB (except Shenneth, who’s thinking along the same lines) has said how much people love personal style blogs. I can’t disagree with that because my favorite fashion blogs are all personal style. However… you know that I’m in the middle of the fashion blogger version of the existential crisis. Lately I’ve been thinking of focusing more on my writing as well.

And perhaps I’ve become somewhat camera shy. I did take photos of my dress, but I hated them all. I photograph other people much better with this 50mm lens than I do myself. I’m thinking of taking the 35mm to Bloggers Night Out, and am even contemplating starting a fund for the 28mm. Not that I don’t love my 50, but it has major focusing problems.

(This is Nnenna if you don’t know her. A face seen frequently on the blog.)

I’m not sure if it’s just me or I got a bad lens. I’m starting to think the 50 is only good when I’m behind the camera and that the remote focus just doesn’t work with it. None of the photos in this post were taken with the remote and I’d say they’re all pretty sharp (wide open at ƒ1.4 for the portraits, too). I can never get photos like this by myself with the remote, although Lydia’s seem to come out all the time. I pretty much can’t believe that my crappy (I mean, as far as SLR lenses go) 35mm generally performs better than my 50mm.

So basically, I just wanted to tell you that this post is going nowhere (ha) and I don’t know what I’m doing. But I will be figuring it out. Promise.

When Lydia Came to Visit

I’m interrupting my usually chronological photos because Lydia’s are already up. And if I post them in order it’ll be next week and I’ll feel like an idiot. Lydia’s write up is much better, and you should look at some of the photos she captured with her wide angle lens!

(Stolen from Lydia.)

Last week Lydia came to New York! We did lots of fun and mostly non-touristy things (I put my foot down at Times Square with a tripod on a Friday night. Just. No.).

Lydia zeroed in on my manicure. I’m starting a new trend. Really.

We went to Central Park because Lydia had never been, and wonder of wonders: I managed not to get us lost. But we didn’t venture any farther uptown than Le Pain Quotidien. Otherwise getting lost would have been a very real possibility because I have no idea where any of those walkways go as soon as they’re past Le Pain.

(Also stolen from Lydia.)

Then we ventured downtown for some shopping, etc. and then we met Nnenna and ate lots of pho!
