Sun Flared

January 31, 2012
Dear Nnenna,

Lately there’s been a handful of beautiful days scattered among the grey and rainy ones. It feels nice to get out and about without a heavy coat, although it’s somewhat baffling for what’s supposed to be the dead of winter.

Not sure why, but I’m looking down in every single photo. Just one of those camera shy days. Either that or the appearance of the sun has nearly blinded me.

I’m wearing my Simply Vera Vera Wang jacket, Francesca’s Collections cardigan, Laugh Cry Repeat (just featured on Of a Kind!) shirt, J Brand jeans, Stuart Weitzman heels, and ken + dana necklace and ring. This is my Dana Buchman/Kohl’s bag again and my favorite old Anthropologie scarf.

Standing on Pine Needles at the Golden Hour

Dear Dotty,

The days are definitely getting longer now, but I’d forgotten how quickly the sun disappears and lost the golden hour after only a few photos. That’s okay though, because soon photos will be possible as late as dinner time!

I wore something very similar to this outfit when Lydia came to visit for the first time (I can’t even look at those photos, bare legs– sob). I’m sort of in the middle of the fashion blogger version of the existential crisis (what is the purpose of red tights? do I even like taking photos any more or is it just habit?), so naturally I put on something that I thought might alleviate said crisis. Leather, of course, black, and apparently grey semi-opaque Swiss dot tights.

I feel most like myself when I wear black leather and crazy Helmut Lang coats, but I’d really like to add some pieces in bright solid colors for spring. I don’t know what I was doing last spring, but… I was feeling uninspired.

I’m wearing my Helmut Lang coat (out of stock, but there were tons floating around at the sample sale so there must be some around), Francesca’s Collections wrap/cardigan with a J.Crew shell underneath, Gap leather skirt (Tokyo Joe – East Village), Merona/Target Swiss dot tights, and MIA booties (DSW).

Going South for the Winter in Alexander Wang

December 24, 2011
Dear Lydia,

There’ve been quite a few days that were definitely warm enough for bare legs, but unfortunately now that heatwave has passed through and I’m in tights once again. After a quick stop in Washington earlier this week, I’m in North Carolina for the holidays.

I wanted to experiment with a looser silhouette with this dress, but I don’t like it as much as the other ways I’ve styled it in the past. If I had a longer sweater I think I would like it a lot more, but this incarnation is not one of my favorite ways to wear this dress (one, two, three, four, five, six).

I’m wearing my Francesca’s Collections cardigan, Alexander Wang dress, Assets by Sara Blakely tights, and Stuart Weitzman shoes. I wore Alex Wang on Christmas Eve last year, too. Maybe it’ll become a tradition.

Merry Christmas! I hope your holidays are merry and bright :)

Between Bridges | Alexander Wang & Foley + Corinna

Dear Silvergirl,

Brooklyn Bridge Park really is one of the best spots in New York, and Shivani had never been so I hopped us over on the F train. Despite the gloom and insane wind it was an unbelievably warm day. In between trains passing through, DUMBO is a quiet neighborhood and I like taking people out of areas that are seen as typically New York. Part of the beauty of this city is the amazing amount of different experiences you can have– sometimes all of them in one day!

Shivani left New York in the early evening and I met Nnenna for some shopping in Flatiron. At 8pm it was still warm enough for dinner outside at Shake Shack, an awesome treat this late in the season. I thought the everyone would have the same idea to dine al fresco one more time before winter sets in, but there were only about five people in line before us. Totally unbelievable, considering I’ve seen an hour long wait during the spring downpours we had earlier in the year.

I’m wearing my Simply Vera for Kohl’s jacket, Francesca’s Collections cardigan, Alexander Wang dress, Assets by Sara Blakely tights, and Born boots. And of course carrying my favorite old Foley + Corinna bag.

Hope you have lots of fun things planned for the holidays! I have lots of traveling to do this week.

New York Weekend

Dear Dotty,

Over the weekend my cousins came to visit and we did some touristy things. I usually only see the tree as I walk through on my way to Anthropologie. I don’t like the touristy areas of Manhattan… they aren’t really New York to me, although I did take a few good photos.

Then I took them to Flatiron, Union Square, and the East Village. They’d never been, which I can’t even imagine… they’re among my favorite neighborhoods in New York. I wanted to get them to Brooklyn as well, but there wasn’t time. Oh well, guess they’ll just have to visit again!

Do you have any fun holiday plans with friends or family?

Photo Diary: Life in the Country, Part Two

Dear Nnenna,

I think sometimes it’s nice to visit the countryside, but honestly it’s always such a relief to return to New York and wander the streets and have Seamless for food delivery. I can never quite decide if the quiet is peaceful or tiresome. Silence can be just as grating as noise from the street (which generally I find comforting, ha).

Things are so much less expensive though. Artisanal scones for $2? Thanks and I’ll take two :) And Target is such a delightful place. And driving! I’ve missed being in the rush of cars instead of standing next to them.

Hover over for extra photo details, as usual.

Feather Dress on a Bridge

November 9, 2011

I decided to try to make better use of this dress, but it’s a difficult piece because the cotton voile is such a summery fabric. It’s also a one-shoulder, so the line isn’t good under a sweater and I think it looks kind of odd across the chest. It’s a favorite dress though, so I’m continually looking for new ways to wear it. I think a cropped jacket would work, although I don’t have any right now.

Packing is so time consuming! I’ve hardly been doing anything else and surviving mainly on coffee. Hopefully things will settle soon.

Gap blazer, Leifsdottir dress, Talbots scarf, Francesca’s Collections cardigan, Frye boots, Coach bag.

The dress by itself:

Sunglasses Headband

Sometimes I forget my sunglasses on my head, and then I’m like: where are they, where did they go?

Oh.

I have them.

This is a new look for my leather skirt. I was trying to come up with new ways to wear it and eventually just decided on leaving my cardigan thing open over it. Has kind of a layered look. Also thought the belt was a good idea, but over the leather skirt it ended up being too much bulk and I lost it at the first opportunity. Maybe a skinny belt or sash would have been better? I like the way it looks in photos but it was just too uncomfortable.

Happy fall, everyone! Hope you’re having an awesome weekend. So far I’ve been having an awesomely lazy weekend…

Francesca’s Collections open cardigan, ZARA shirt, Gap skirt (possibly vintage), Forever 21 belt, Legale fleece-lined over-the-knees, Cole Haan ballets.
