The Strand and The Cooper

August 7, 2011

Thanks Nnenna for taking my pictures! It was a dark and stormy night, so unfortunately hardly any of my photos from StrandedBlogger came out. All the photos of Nnenna and me were a total fail. I did get one good one of Katy but that’s basically it, even my outfit photos are so dark and blurry. I was way too busy chatting with bloggers to pay attention to my camera anyway!

Some of the bloggers I met are A La Mode et Plus, Feed My Sole, Oh to be a Muse, One Woman’s Style Evolution, Radiant Brown Beauty, and The Well-Appointed Catwalk.

The Top of the Strand is actually very small and intimate for a rooftop bar. The only odd thing is that if you open a tab at the bar they automatically add 18% gratuity. We had a great time, though, and I hope to meet up with these bloggers again soon!

On Location Again

August 24, 2011

Another day, another photoshoot. I photographed the my friend’s almost six-week old newborn, so I’m not wearing jewelry or anything that could accidentally damage baby’s skin.

I haven’t worn this skirt in forever! It’s from Express about a year ago or so. I started disliking the elastic waist and didn’t like any of my belts over it until I tried this one (Forever 21, my new favorite black belt). I got this Generra shirt from Marshalls five years ago and promptly cut off most of the sleeves, which used to bell out and end at the elbow.

This is another no looking day, I suppose. I don’t know what I’ve been doing lately when I take photos but it does not include looking at the camera. I’ll try and fix that, or at least be me conscious of the photos I’m taking.

Dreams That You Dream Of

I’ve found myself with writer’s block all week.  Not sure why, I suppose I’ve just been lacking writing inspiration.  Either that or I’ve been writing way too much professionally in the past few weeks and have reached my acceptably decent writing limit.

Wore this sometime last week on a day that wasn’t too warm.  Luckily I had the in-between winter/spring coat to wear.  This week the weather’s been quite nice, I spent some time in the park today taking photos of flowers with my iPhone’s Hipstamatic app… and then I happened to look to my right and notice a suit doing the same thing with his BlackBerry, haha.  The flowers look super nice for just having popped up suddenly so I suspect some landscapers may have had something to do with that!

Weekend Again

So, weekend again, although not a really weekend look.  My skirt was totally sticking to my tights all day despite the slip I was wearing.  And that dress is even lined so all three layers were sticking to my tights, I must have acquired a lot of static electricity somehow!

It was not actually warm out, you can see that I had my wool coat and was wearing it except for the photo.  But it was quite sunny so instead of wearing my usual embellished grey ribbon belt with this dress I wore the brightest one I could find.  It looks kind of ridiculous actually, but I do like that belt (sale section at Zara last week).  For this city street photo I enlisted the help of my friend as we were on our way from lunch to catch the train downtown.  I think the tripod might be a bit precarious to use on my own, someone might totally run into it.  It’s also lightweight and not too good at standing on its three legs so I guess I’ll be looking for very quiet places to take photos whenever I have it.

One borrowed, one mine, both from internship.

Aren’t these flowers nice?  And they didn’t have much of a scent, I’m really allergic to a lot of smells during allergy season but these didn’t bother me at all!

I hope you had a good weekend! It was a friend’s birthday so we had some fondue (chocolate with sea salt!) at The Melting Pot to celebrate!

Least Brilliant Idea. Ever.

Guys.  Guys.  On Saturday I decided that since it was not raining for the first time in my (admittedly short when concerning the weather) memory, I should go out for an adventure.  To Waterside.  It did seem like a brilliant idea at the time.

And then I got there… and I realized why no one else was about.  The wind.  Crazy.

And I only got one semi-normal looking photo.  My hair.  It’s… I don’t even know where it is.

On the plus side, the park was mostly empty which significantly cut down on the what-is-that-crazy-doing looks.  And I had a lovely (windy) walk.

But I might have to brave the streets next time.  Tall buildings totally cut down on wind, right?

Back to the Beginning

24 Feb 2011

I feel as if these photos are particularly timely today after Jessica of What I Wore’s post yesterday on “flattering” and the pressure to dress to impress (the comments on that post are great).  I still post photos that I’m not too happy with and outfits I don’t think are anything particularly great because let’s be honest, I am not a fashion magazine editor.  And that’s not what this blog is about, although that doesn’t mean I can’t love what Kate Lanphear and Anna Dello Russo wear.

This outfit is typical of days when I don’t do a lot of styling or am seeking something comfortable and unfussy.  Nothing really special or fashion-forward (I think I’m still a bit of a minimalist at heart).  I started this blog on outfits that look a lot like this one:  little dresses with belts and (usually) tights in a different color.  I’ve managed a lot of evolution since then but I think sometimes it’s not a bad idea to get back to your roots.

Winter Outerwear: Black and White

17 Feb 2011

Warmth!  It was very welcome after all the snow, rain, and freezing rain lately.  I even have proof that I wasn’t the only crazy out without a jacket, the guy in the background is totally carrying his.  Sorry for no post yesterday, so much to do lately!  And sorry I’ve been a really bad blog reader/commenter too, I’m hoping to become up to date with everyone later in the week.

This coat isn’t actually winter outerwear because it’s so light, but I was able to wear it one day at the beginning of the thaw.  The snow is melting and I hope there won’t be any more.  I love snow but it was a seriously snowy winter.  Some of my other winter outwear posts are Vintage, Snow Falling, Three Old Favorites, and Snowstorm of the Week.

I really like this ring!  But I had to give it back.

Dressing for Dinner

12 Feb 2011

Okay, so this is really dressing for a late cocktail party.

For the most part this blog is a chronicle of my daywear– I rarely post photos if I change for dinner (or later) because there’s not a lot of usable light around 8/9 pm.  But this day I got back and changed right away to capture photos.  I wore this for evening when one of my sorority sisters had a Valentine’s cocktail party.  I didn’t want to be too too dressed but luckily there were tons of people in red satin and stilettos.  I had to forego the heels, still far too much ice and too many tall snow banks that must be navigated.  I’ve been doing good with wearing responsible footwear lately.  Walking three miles through New York almost every day I’m there is really doing bad things for my knee, so no heels possible at this time.

Also, sorry I’ve been a bad commenter and a bad comment replier.  I’m going to have to set aside nights for blogging or something.  Time.  Management.  Been out of school for too long.

Love,

Alex

Biiiig Scarf

10 Feb 2011

Fellow personal style blogger and stylish person Lydia was nice enough to send me an amazing email when I was searching for some inspiration, and it included this photo:

I’m not sure where this is from, maybe The Sartorialist or Stockholm Street Style?

Sort of?  No?  I feel like my scarf isn’t long enough to be that cool!

Like most of my clothing, this scarf has a memory.  New Year’s Eve, New York, frozen feet (ballet flats), not an available cab in sight.  I had to duck into Juicy Couture (I was twenty one at the time) and this scarf was on sale.  I loved the cream version I saw earlier in the fall but in person the grey just spoke to me, and the rest is history.

Wishing you good clothing memories and nice weather!

Love,

Alex

On Wednesdays We Wear Pink

Worn on Wednesday 5 Jan 2011

These are back photos from before the snow.

On Wednesday I went to Pottery Barn for euro shams.  I ended up getting mismatched ones, one of which is from the faux sheepskin collection.  And I might have to go back for the throw.  I got it for my friends as a wedding gift last year and I had a really hard time giving it away!

I wore my oxfords because I ended up with a private yoga lesson Tuesday night.  I was the only one at class and it was kind of killer.  I felt really unsteady Wednesday morning and I actually made the responsible decision to wear completely flat shoes.

Sorry my shirt is doing weird things in these photos.  I almost steamed it but then I decided I liked it wrinkled.  The front is silk and just didn’t want to drape properly when tucked into the skirt.  I like this shirt so much that I sort of want it in the other two colors too… I have always had a problem with wanting multiples of clothes I love!

J.Crew shirt, Anthropologie/Odille skirt, Anthropologie belt, HUE tights, Cole Haan oxfords, LV bag + Coach scarf.

I also made the cookies featured on Stylish White Female back in December.  I intended to make them back in December but ran out of time during the holidays.

I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing that these are so sweet they actually gave me a headache (and I adore sweets).  A good thing because I can only eat two at a time… a bad thing if I can’t have just two!  I’ll definitely be making these again!  Maybe next time a little less sugar :)
