Winter Outerwear: Black and White

17 Feb 2011

Warmth!  It was very welcome after all the snow, rain, and freezing rain lately.  I even have proof that I wasn’t the only crazy out without a jacket, the guy in the background is totally carrying his.  Sorry for no post yesterday, so much to do lately!  And sorry I’ve been a really bad blog reader/commenter too, I’m hoping to become up to date with everyone later in the week.

This coat isn’t actually winter outerwear because it’s so light, but I was able to wear it one day at the beginning of the thaw.  The snow is melting and I hope there won’t be any more.  I love snow but it was a seriously snowy winter.  Some of my other winter outwear posts are Vintage, Snow Falling, Three Old Favorites, and Snowstorm of the Week.

I really like this ring!  But I had to give it back.

Guess Where New York

8 Feb 2011

So yeah, not Great Britain (I wish, some tea from Harrods would be lovely).  I’m just playing around with some brushes in GIMP and still looking for postmark brushes that also have brushes for months/days.  That way I can date stamp my photos sort of keeping with the theme of the site!

If you follow my twitter you may have guessed that I’ve been in New York lately.  I’ve started interning at ken and dana design (you might have seen me wear their jewelry before, I own a few pieces) for part of the week, so yes, I’ll be in for the remainder of fashion week.  I won’t be going though, got work to do!  Basically I’m trying to decide if I want to pursue a career in the fashion industry– I really want to know what I’m getting myself into if I do.  I do know that I do not want to work in politics any more.  I’m hoping that I’ll learn a lot (I have no idea what I’m doing) and that this internship will help me decide if this is the right industry for me, or if I should enroll in grad school for Earth and Environmental Sciences.

And much respect for the bloggers who wander around cities with a camera and no tripod.  I don’t know how you do it.  I only got one “what is that freak doing” double take, but up top is the only halfway decent photo I got with my camera on a bench.  Next time I’m taking the tripod, even if I get more weirdo stares!

Love,

Alex

A closer up of the necklace.  I get to borrow jewelry, so I’m hoping to incorporate some cool pieces into my wardrobe!  Promise to tell me if you get tired of seeing it, and I’ll always tell you if something’s borrowed for the day, too.

And a closer up of the ring in the top photo.  So pretty!

Friends in the Snow, dated 29 Jan

One of the very first photos of the day, before I had a chance to stomp some of the snow down a bit.  If I’m not careful the snow will go down the top of my boots.

Saturday 29 Jan 2011

It was really snowing when these photos were taken.  My friend came over so I could play personal shopper.  We had an impromptu photo shoot because I was only half dressed when she got there and I still had to take photos.  Yeah, she thought I was pretty crazy for going out for photos in the snow.

This is Jen.  I’ve known her from the pre-school (age three).  I gave her a crash course in DSLR photography and she took that first photo of me in black and white.  We both prefer ourselves in black and white, and once I even toyed with the idea of making this a black and white only blog.

Later we went shopping (to the partially outdoor mall) and of course I forgot the umbrella.

Alex

Some Old Things and One New

Tuesday 18 Jan 2011

Salutations!  I guess I’m just into the vintage look/old looking photo look right now.  Probably has something to do with me working on the blog layout a little more.  I thought it was loading too slowly so I made a few adjustments.  If anything crazy goes down with the CSS in the next couple don’t worry, I’ll fix it!

I got two new belts at the LOFT 40% off sale!  I love buying belts when they have huge sales like that.  This is one of them.  I intended to wear it with the LOFT safari dress (and with other things too of course) but the dress didn’t fit me at all.  Petites were too tight through the chest and shoulder and I ended up swimming in regular sizes.  Sigh.  I really like that dress.

I’ve fallen behind on posts again, which means I’ll be posting through the weekend, tomorrow as well.  If you’re not out playing in the snow (or sun, lucky things) pop by the blog tomorrow!

Love,

Alex

Looking a Little Chromatic Aberrated

Friday 14 Jan 2011

Dear Friends,

Next time I’ll correct the photos, I promise.  But this time I didn’t because the chromatic aberration (pinkish hair in the first photo) matches my shirt and I rather like it.  Sometimes I do casual Friday kinds of looks.  And most of times I wear pants are on Fridays.  Okay, so I’m only calling this casual because I’m wearing a plaid shirt and flat boots.

I bought this shirt on super clearance more than a year ago from the juniors section of JC Penney, I think it’s like an XXL or something.  I love its loose, longer fit and I’ve been trying to find more shirts just like it!  (No luck so far.)  When I bought it I never thought I would get so much wear out of it, but it’s actually become one of my favorite pieces.

I replaced the usual belt with my often-seen LOFT double wrap belt for something different.  Out of curiosity, does anyone have Commando tights?  I’m still on the search for truly opaque ones and I’ve heard Commando are the absolute best aside from Wolford, but Wolford are soooo expensive.

Love, Alex

Winter Outerwear: Vintage

We’ve been having a lot of snow in the Northeast lately.  I’m skipping two sets of photos (pre-snow) to show you some timely outfits (for once).

My coat literally saved my ass on Friday— the temperature dropped drastically in the afternoon and a lot of the melted snow turned into ice.  Which I didn’t notice because those ice patches were puddles at 1pm.  Yeah, wiped out.  Not pretty.  Luckily no one was around to hear me laugh hysterically at myself while lying on a sheet of ice in the middle of the road (all the other crazies must have stayed in).  This coat is so huge that I didn’t feel a thing when I fell.

The best part about this coat, though, is the lining:

The initials belong to my cousin’s mother, it was her coat and gifted to me by my cousin during the holidays.  My cousin is very tall (and I top out at 5 feet 2.25 inches) so the coat doesn’t exactly fit her.

I left my hair kind of wavy and disheveled, I didn’t want to look too done up wearing both the coat and the suiting dress.

I found some very tiny gloves in the pocket.  They definitely don’t fit me and I can’t think of anyone I know that could wear them.  Anyone wear glove size 6 1/2?

The days are getting longer, but how quickly the light still fades.

Between Holidays

I think I’ve been suffering from holiday burnout and general I-have-nothing-wear-but-not-really syndrome, so I picked out one of my favorite shirts, a fluffy skirt, and a new sparkly belt.

Out of all the things I bought in 2010 (and there were way too many, believe me), I think this lowly American Apparel dolman sleeve shirt is the best purchase of the year.  I surprised myself with how much I loved it, how many times I wore it, and how much more versatile it is than I thought at the time of purchase.  None of my other AA stuff gets worn nearly as often.  I might have to order more colors, is that a serious fashion faux-pas?

With Christmas in the Background

Worn on 25 Dec 2010 – Christmas

It was almost a white Christmas!  This is the most casual thing I’ve worn for Christmas in years… well actually last year I might have worn black denim.  But usually I’m fond of dresses.  Although my ideal Christmas (and winter in general) outfit would be a long plaid skirt with maybe a white or red blouse.  I want to wear that sometime in my life, even if it might be a long time coming!

Sorry for slow posting, and I’m also 200+ blog posts behind in reading.  If you haven’t heard a peep from me that’s why!  A less than ideal social schedule for blogging lately… :(

Oh, also, guess where— same location 25Dec and 26Dec…

Christmas Eve Dramatic in Alexander Wang

Worn on Friday 24 Dec 2010

Christmas Eve is always a casual, jeans kind of affair… for everyone but me, of course!  I usually wear a dress and some sky high heels or something.  I tried to keep it a little more casual this year by wearing boots.  I really wanted to wear my new dress and I thought really, why not?  You can do it!

I got this dress at the Alexander Wang sample sale last week, which wasn’t nearly as chaotic as expected.  Maybe the news about no shoes and bags made it less of a must-go affair.  There were some fabulously good deals though, especially on T!  I wanted more dresses but sadly all the others would have been impossible to take in in the chest due to the ruching/draping.  And let me tell you that they definitely would have had to be taken in at least two inches on me.  They were all so lovely too.  Sigh.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday full of your favorite things!  I’m hoping I’ll be able to get back, so many airports are closed/closing, but I do love a good blizzard!!

Baby Owl Goes to the Gift Exchange

Worn on Tuesday 21 Dec 2010

I haven’t worn this dress since October, but I’ve been wanting to try it out during the winter.  It definitely looks more like a skirt with the cardigan buttoned up over it.  I just tucked in the shoulder bow ribbons and tied the waist ribbon over the cardigan.

I wore this to work and then to the holiday party I was most looking forward to this year with my friends from high school, middle school, grade school, kindergarten, and pre-school.  Okay, I only went to pre-school with one of them but we’ve all been friends for a long time!  Our 2010 family photo, silly edition:

And yes, my friends are still making whoo whooooo noises at me, despite the fact that those really are quail feathers!

Merry Christmas, everyone, happy holidays, I wish you good company and a good night!
