More Photographer than Blogger

Dear Mia,

Recently I’ve been thinking of making Delayed Missives a little bit more editorial, although literally every person I mentioned it to at IFB (except Shenneth, who’s thinking along the same lines) has said how much people love personal style blogs. I can’t disagree with that because my favorite fashion blogs are all personal style. However… you know that I’m in the middle of the fashion blogger version of the existential crisis. Lately I’ve been thinking of focusing more on my writing as well.

And perhaps I’ve become somewhat camera shy. I did take photos of my dress, but I hated them all. I photograph other people much better with this 50mm lens than I do myself. I’m thinking of taking the 35mm to Bloggers Night Out, and am even contemplating starting a fund for the 28mm. Not that I don’t love my 50, but it has major focusing problems.

(This is Nnenna if you don’t know her. A face seen frequently on the blog.)

I’m not sure if it’s just me or I got a bad lens. I’m starting to think the 50 is only good when I’m behind the camera and that the remote focus just doesn’t work with it. None of the photos in this post were taken with the remote and I’d say they’re all pretty sharp (wide open at ƒ1.4 for the portraits, too). I can never get photos like this by myself with the remote, although Lydia’s seem to come out all the time. I pretty much can’t believe that my crappy (I mean, as far as SLR lenses go) 35mm generally performs better than my 50mm.

So basically, I just wanted to tell you that this post is going nowhere (ha) and I don’t know what I’m doing. But I will be figuring it out. Promise.

And just because, here are more photos I took while I was taking a walk in Stuyvesant Cove Park.

What a shame about the 50mm! Mike had to send back a new lens he got as it was definitely malfunctioning, and they said they can either refund him or he can wait anywhere between six weeks and six months for it to be repaired.

You should definitely feel free to experiment with content and format, though! I know that sometimes I feel nervous about introducing non-outfit-of-the-day stuff on RiS because (I imagine) that readers expect a certain kind of content and will scroll past/lose interest if I don’t maintain that, but honestly, the rest of me is kinda like, “it’s my blarg I’mma do what I want!” And people tend to respond positively, if at all, to content variation. :) So all I guess I’m saying is don’t worry about your readers and play around with stuff until you’re happy. None of us want you to feel like blogging is a chore!

I think you can definitely explore and experiment with different types of posts (like street style photography, as you mentioned!).  Also, I should learn to take more pictures of you because you always capture these great shots for me and I want to do the same for you :)

Your photos are fabulous – maybe you could take this in a street style direction — that would be very awesome, since you have access to new yorkers.

As far as the 50mm focusing… you only just got that lens, is it still under warranty? Maybe you could have canon look at it? As for my lens, I felt like it worked much better with my rebel than it has been with the 60D (but better since switching the mode to one shot)
With me behind the lens it’s awesome though. Sigh. How nice it would be if you could really take your own photos, haha.

So my lens is actually broken… the autofocus doesn’t work at all now, haha. It’s probably still under warranty… I hope.

Also, I am the worst streetstyle photographer ever. Just ask Nnenna about this photoshoot… I cannot give direction at all.

Yay Nnenna!  (I got here from your comment on her blog…clicking links to avoid my homework, you know.)  I’m not familiar with your blog at all but seriously, take your blog in any direction you want and don’t think twice about it.  As long as you’re enjoying yourself, your readers will, too.  :)

Alex, you take such beautiful pictures. And you have gorgeous style! I wish I knew more about cam cam stuff, but the fact that I call cameras “cam cams” goes to show how much I really know about it.
