Fashion, intentionally or not, can evoke a feeling when you wear or see it. A good designer or design team understands that and plays to that feeling be it sexy, pretty, professional, relaxed or in the case of Spanish brand, Desigual, FUN!

Born in Ibiza and based in Barcelona, Desigual has built a brand known as much for its innovative prints and bright colors as it is known for its philosophy of positivity and fun.  Each season, the design team creates a massive collection (sometimes over 1000 pieces when you include clothing and accessories) based on a specific theme.  For Spring/Summer 2014, the theme was La Vida es Chula (Life is Cool).

Debuting at New York’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Desigual brought the joy and smiles inspired by the Spanish coast and the idyllic landscape to the Theatre at Lincoln Center. Models danced and skipped down the runway with huge smiles and blowing kisses to the crowd that had assembled to see the new collection—definitely a departure (and a relief) from the tradition of the stoic, expressionless face making its way down the catwalk.

The Spring 2014 collection brought lively colors in florals, tie-dye and stripes to “capture the essence of the good life” as the brand describes it. Sitting in the audience, I felt like I was ready to jet off to the Spain and its beautiful beaches, lush terrain and the hustle and bustle of the islands and cities of its Mediterranean coast.
