When You’d Rather Take Photos Than Be In Them

Dear Caitlin,

It’s pretty commonly known that I don’t dress up for fashion week (or at least not more than usual). I’ve never had my photo taken by a street style photographer and I’m not really one of the cool kids with an ultra high fashion look.

At fashion week, I’d much rather take the photos than be in them. Bill Cunningham smiled at me today, which totally made my early morning presentation worth the trip all the way to the UWS. Everyone was shouting “we love you, Bill!” as he stood by the street outside Lincoln Center. And I saw a very dapper Hamish Bowles, although no Grace Coddington. Yet.

Over the seasons I’ve spent taking photos here, I’ve realized that the last thing I want to be doing is tugging at my outfit when I’m shooting a show or a presentation. I still like to look fashion week presentable, though. You won’t see me in cargo pants or a utility vest like some of the photographers in the pit, even if I am going to be on the media riser for my last show of the season. I’m a little nervous about the runway photographers, actually. Wish me luck, it’ll be my first time photographing as official press!

I am somewhere in between. I want the best of both worlds. I want to take amazing photographs, and I also want them taken of me. This is a challenge, because hauling camera gear and wearing heels is not an easy task. I have yet to find a way to successfully, simultaneously, achieve both… and still have a drink in my hand to boot.

This dress is awesome, I love the seaming and the unusual color, and your sensible footwear.

Totally loving this leather dress- now I think I need a colored leather dress. And Hope is right- you always look super chic. I would love to spot Bill Cunningham in person one day- that would be amazing!

That’s the second time I’ve spotted him in the early morning at LC, which is one more time than the afternoon. Maybe he’s a morning person and we all have to go there early? Or maybe it’s because Michael Kors was showing… so then we have to go look for him before Michael Kors.

Thanks Hope! I try to balance comfort with my style, although tonight I have a feeling I’m just going to be wearing black jeans. If I really wanted to fit in I’d need a utility vest… and I don’t think that’s happening. Don’t have time to run to Old Navy to find a nice one, haha.

Thanks for your kind words on my blog, they sweetened my day!
I really like your outfit here, the dress is just too pretty and the bag, too! And your hair looks so lovely!

    Have a great day,

Good Luck and I totally know what you mean. Sometimes I just hate to be in front of the camera when I need to be behind the camera. There is nothing like trying to get a good angle and having to worry about bending properly so I’m not showing off the goods.

Absolutely! Honestly, I have a hard time with short dresses and skirts any more… must be getting older. Also, if I’m doing something like wedding or maternity photography, it’s not uncommon to see my lying on the ground to get an interesting angle. Makes some outfits a little difficult!
