Things You Didn’t Know: Winter Edition

Things You Didn’t Know is a new series on Delayed Missives. It will probably recur every month or so and the content will vary, but I’ll always reveal one fun fact about me. Today’s Things You Didn’t Know is about winter.

Dear Silvergirl,

Not sure if this will come as a surprise to you, but I love winter. I’ve been a winter sports enthusiast my entire life. It all started with skiing when I was a young girl, and a little bit later I picked up figure skating. I am not able to ski as much as I once did (where do you put skis in New York??). However, I still enjoy a good black diamond slope. I’m also a huge fan of off-trail skiing. Not that I recommend that. I don’t. Unless you really know what you’re doing.

Dreamy Sunset Forest | Outfits

    IMG_4641

Dear Kimberlee,

There’s something special about photos captured just as the sun is disappearing, isn’t there?. The light is always glowing and soft, so no wonder it’s one of my favorite times of the day to shoot. My other favorite time is the blue hour, and I also like days that are perfectly overcast. Those are difficult to come by– it can’t be raining, but it can’t be too clear either.

Fancy Hems for the Holidays

vintage betsey johnson dress holiday outfits

Dear Kaitlyn,

I hope you had a great end to 2013! Christmas Eve dinner tends to be the more formal night for my family, and it’s kind of a tradition for me to wear something black and a pile of jewelry. This Betsey Johnson dress is an old favorite of mine that transitions really well throughout all of the seasons. It came with a small black slip, but I swapped it out for one I recently got from Ruche. This slip is fancier and has tiered chiffon ruffles at the bottom. It also has the added benefit of adding a little bit of length to this dress, which I have always felt was on the edge of  too short.

When You’d Rather Take Photos Than Be In Them

fashion blogger at fashion week lincoln center wearing reiss pastel blue leather dress burberry scarf coach satchel cole haan wedges

Dear Caitlin,

It’s pretty commonly known that I don’t dress up for fashion week (or at least not more than usual). I’ve never had my photo taken by a street style photographer and I’m not really one of the cool kids with an ultra high fashion look.

At fashion week, I’d much rather take the photos than be in them. Bill Cunningham smiled at me today, which totally made my early morning presentation worth the trip all the way to the UWS. Everyone was shouting “we love you, Bill!” as he stood by the street outside Lincoln Center. And I saw a very dapper Hamish Bowles, although no Grace Coddington. Yet.

How to Wear Fall 2013 Color Trends Right Now

acai ikat dress and samba red coach bag fall 2013 color trends

Dear Francy,

As much as summer dresses are great, my preference is actually for fall clothing… the layers, the scarves, the textures– so much potential! During the summer I tend to dress extremely simply, so I try to add interest with color and pattern.

I’m finding myself ready for fall as August comes to a close. The extreme heat wave we had earlier this summer seems to have depleted all of my summer style inspiration, so I’ve been looking at how to wear Fall 2013 color trends right now while it’s still a little steamy out. The Pre-Fall collections I’ve seen are gorgeous, but it’s still early days here and on the warm side for the trends involving jackets and layers….

Snowfall

Dear Katha,

Well it’s certainly been cold and windy here lately. Winter is setting in. There’s also been a bit of snow, which you probably know that I love. All those winter sports as a child… I should never have stopped figure skating. That was one of my favorites.

Von Vonni was kind enough to send me this wintry patterned floral dress with long sleeves, which I just adore. I think that long sleeves are so underused on dresses.

Night Lights

Dear Dotty,

I think photos at night can be pretty fantastic, especially with a city behind you. Just have to find the right light (or bring an assistant with your own). That’s the Queensboro bridge behind me, which I haven’t really shown like this before. It’s probably even better at sunset.

Fallen Leaves in T by Alexander Wang & Joe’s Jeans

T by Alexander Wang open cardigan (wrapped and pinned) | Old Navy lace shirt | Joe’s Jeans grey skinny jeans (similar) | Born boots | Coach Legacy Leather Molly Satchel | Ippolita Wonderland necklace

I don’t know how there can be so many leaves on the ground and so many leaves left on the trees. It’s like the opposite of the sock eating laundry monster. Where did they all come from?

Wearing Flowers with Leaves on the Ground

Dear Francy,

I pretty much bolted out of New York with jeans, a trench coat and my computers… so my outfits lately have been interesting. Why yes, I’ll wear this hot house floral dress when it’s 40 degrees and dropping. I made no tights until November, though! These are the first tights of the season. Black, of course, although they reverse to grey. Good move on Sara Blakely’s part. …
