Adventures With DSLR: First Edition

…Or Photography for Hopeless Cases.

Exhibit A:  This is sort of how I’m feeling.  Ugh.  At least I take a decent photo when everything is in focus.  This is f/9 in aperture priority mode.  But I’d really like to blur the background while keeping the foreground in focus.

Exhibit B:  Not exactly what I had in mind.  I take great photos of everything unfocused though.  I’ve become really good at this technique.  Call me, you know, if you need crazy blurry photos.

Exhibit C:  So we’re good again! The tree does look kind of cool actually, but I’d really like to blur it out.  Maybe I’ll get a remote and let the camera do all the focusing for me.  And I could definitely improve the white balance and ISO — color and exposure were majorly corrected in iPhoto!

Well, there’s always tomorrow :)  I’ll get it one of these days, although a Barnes and Noble trip for an omgggineedhelppp!!!! book might be in order.

Gloom and Doom

8.22.10 ~ Sunday

My shirt is totally crooked — oops!  Fall was in the air last week, the temperature plummeted and it rained for days.  This week’s projected forecast is the mid-90s and while that’s getting a bit hot I will be happy go through my favorite summer dresses for what will probably be the last time for the season.  I’m not looking forward to pants (I never look forward to pants) but I will be glad to break out the boots!

The Last Summer Sundress

8.19.2010 ~ Thursday

I recently ordered this dress from Rue La La ($25, Sunday Night Styleathons are seriously good).  It’s getting to be the end of summer and I wasn’t sure if I should get it but I think I might be able to wear it into fall with dark tights to anchor it, maybe grey or burgundy?  And maybe a cozy sweater too?  But for now it’s styled up with some espadrilles and my favorite belt from Charlotte Russe.  This is actually only the second time I’ve worn these espadrilles this season.  I forgot how stable they are and I should really wear them more often, I just wish they didn’t cut me off at the ankle so arrestingly.  The ties look so pale against my skin right now!

I forgot to photograph the back!  Oh well, next time!

I might steal your clothes and wear them if they fit me

8.1.2010 ~ Sunday ~ Hello August

August first was a rather cool and dreary day, highly unusual!  I was able to wear pants for the first time in ever… sometimes I miss being able to wear pants (too hot) even if I normally favor skirts and dresses!  These are supposed to be jeggings but they don’t quite fit like they’re supposed to.  Maybe if I hemmed them it would be better?

I’m seeing Counting Crows on Friday and it’s supposed to be hot and humid.  Any outfit suggestions?

A Little Bit Dark

7.22.2010 ~ Thursday

I doubt anyone would be able to guess it but I actually have a fairly intense goth streak.  Well not as much now, however I used to wear tons of black (still do at times) and most of the year I’m really pale… so it would totally work out for me.  I’m really serious (you probably don’t believe me but I would buy the entire Rick Owens and Yohji Yamamoto collections every season if I could) I used to wear black and ribbons and lace and crazy things all the time, I swear.  I’m actually starting to move toward that again, although I’m favoring black and studs… okay, I know you totally think I’m making it up so I’ll just have to start digging up old photos.  If I could just find senior prom photos… the dress is a gothic minimalist black lace tour de force!

Studs and Fleurs

7.2.2010 ~ Friday

These shoes are so nuts!  People think they are crazy.  They are very tall, and the balance is not that good so I might have the heels lowered.  I’m wearing the microruffles dress again which I think might be reaching MVP status.  Dressed up, dressed down… it’s versatile and more importantly light in the 95+ temperatures in the past week!  It remains in the high 80s every after dark these days so there’s no escaping the heat.

I’ve been meaning to experiment with some nighttime photography so I’m glad I didn’t have time for photos before I left for dinner with my friends.  I think these were taken at about 11:30pm, a little later than I intended to take test shots.  They turned out surprisingly clear though!  One thing I did learn is that the camera cannot be too far away and definitely not as far as during the day!  The photos came out much clearer when the camera (and flash) were significantly closer to me than usual!

6.19.2010 ~ Saturday

This is the shirt I wore here.  Now you can see the rest of it!  I think it’s actually close to tunic length.  I like taking photos in the shade right now :)  It’s so hot in the sun!  I almost went outlet shopping over the weekend but it was just too hot to be walking outside and shopping!  So instead I had a productive day of clothing buying inside a lovely air conditioned mall!  Juicy Couture is running a 50% off promotion on swimwear in case you’d like any!  I think it’s still going on but call your local store just to be certain.  These J. Crew sandals are practically ancient!  I got them when I was a freshman in high school, so that’s almost ten years ago.  Back when sandals from J. Crew only cost $65 and not $150!  They’ve held up so well over the years and are decently comfortable.  I once wore them all over the cobblestone streets in Italy with practically no problems!

No, I didn’t take a secret beach vacation, I just became extremely tan overnight… with the help of Sevin Nyne Self-Tanning Lotion.  Actually the spray is better but you only get two uses out of it.  I think the lotion gives you about five or six depending on how much you apply.  Just be sure to really rub it in!

Flowers on the Patio

6.11.2010 ~ Friday ~ South of the Mason-Dixon Line

I spent the end of last week traveling and attending celebrations.  Friday evening was my friend’s graduation party, her parents are longtime friends of the family.  It was definitely a warm one!  And I managed to get bit by a mosquito sometime during thirty second trip from car to house.  I sometimes think I would benefit from a mosquito repellent that is injected in the blood!

This almost an exact repeat of something I wore in early April.  I just changed the shoes.
