March Summer

18 March 2011

There was a random heat wave day before Black and White week… when the temperature skyrocketed to 78 degrees.  I planned to wear tights (it was only supposed to hit 70) but as soon as I stepped outside I went right back in to change.  I got this dress last year at the end of summer so I’ve sort of been anxious to wear it more.  It was a really good deal from one of Rue La La’s Sunday Night Styleathons.  The only thing I don’t like about this dress is the waistband’s tendency to collapse if I don’t constantly pull it straight.  I guess that’s what belts are for!

I sort of feel like I should be going to a music festival in this outfit… maybe I actually will this summer?

Guess Where New York

8 Feb 2011

So yeah, not Great Britain (I wish, some tea from Harrods would be lovely).  I’m just playing around with some brushes in GIMP and still looking for postmark brushes that also have brushes for months/days.  That way I can date stamp my photos sort of keeping with the theme of the site!

If you follow my twitter you may have guessed that I’ve been in New York lately.  I’ve started interning at ken and dana design (you might have seen me wear their jewelry before, I own a few pieces) for part of the week, so yes, I’ll be in for the remainder of fashion week.  I won’t be going though, got work to do!  Basically I’m trying to decide if I want to pursue a career in the fashion industry– I really want to know what I’m getting myself into if I do.  I do know that I do not want to work in politics any more.  I’m hoping that I’ll learn a lot (I have no idea what I’m doing) and that this internship will help me decide if this is the right industry for me, or if I should enroll in grad school for Earth and Environmental Sciences.

And much respect for the bloggers who wander around cities with a camera and no tripod.  I don’t know how you do it.  I only got one “what is that freak doing” double take, but up top is the only halfway decent photo I got with my camera on a bench.  Next time I’m taking the tripod, even if I get more weirdo stares!

Love,

Alex

A closer up of the necklace.  I get to borrow jewelry, so I’m hoping to incorporate some cool pieces into my wardrobe!  Promise to tell me if you get tired of seeing it, and I’ll always tell you if something’s borrowed for the day, too.

And a closer up of the ring in the top photo.  So pretty!

P.S. I Don’t Like This Outfit

Tuesday 25 Jan 2011

Okay: first, two questions.

  1. Is my page loading annoyingly slow?
  2. Is my favicon working for you?

I think my theme is too fussy as well, I’m going to try to streamline so again, beware the possible CSS throwing up all over the page.

Also, Lyddie from Chic on the Cheap has declared it yellow week.  (But I’m wearing red on Friday to raise awareness for heart disease for a style blogger Go Red For Women, organized by Andie.)  I’m totally wearing yellow tomorrow, I would have today except I never actually got dressed.  Ice storms and all, you know.  If we get enough ice tonight I might really skate on the street tomorrow, I haven’t done that in years.

So I really really don’t like this outfit, I almost didn’t post it.  I just… don’t like it.  I don’t know if the proportions are off, or I don’t really like the colors… it’s just… eh.  Okay, not great, not even really styled, just…  I don’t even know why I don’t like it, just that I really really really don’t.  They liked it at the endodontist though, told me I should go into fashion.  I wish I was still living in Japan, dental work is so much more affordable there.    I kind of want to fly back to get a crown, it would only be marginally more expensive and I would get a trip out of it.  If I didn’t go shopping I would just about break even, maybe $100 more.  Or I could just forego the crown and never use my left teeth again?

If you haven’t noticed I’ve been in a bit of a style slump lately (at least I feel like it) for practically all of January.  Inspire me?  What has been inspiring you lately?

I wish you more inspiration than I have as you finish out the week!

Love,

Alex

Sunny Dress in the Snow

Monday 27Dec 2010

I still have a few photos left from last year, I’ve been posting a lot less because of the holidays.  I’m also still so behind on blog reading partly because Tumblr is always down and partly because I am just really behind.  I think I have 200 posts backed up in my Bloglovin or something :P  I’m here, guys, and I’m working on reading!

It’s been so windy here lately!  I got some funny photos of my hair literally sticking straight up… yeah, attractive.  I don’t like when it’s windy so much in the winter because it makes it just that much colder outside.  And it can cause your car to feel like it’s blowing off the road, I seriously thought something was wrong with my steering for like 20 minutes (go me) before I figured out the wind was just that strong!  I hope your new year has gotten off to a good start!  I celebrated by cleaning house (most of it) and not taking photos (Juicy Couture velour (enough said)).

Complements

Worn on Friday 19 Nov 2010

Thoughts:  This is me pre-migraine… I could feel it coming on and you can probably see it in the shadows under my eyes.  Bleh.  I did recover eventually, thankfully.  After a lot of Excedrin and caffeine.  All those beautiful red leaves on the tree are gone too, so terribly sad the storm blew them all away.

I was very tempted to wear this lace shirt without the navy camisole underneath but it was cold.  And windy.  And the shirt, it’s very sheer.  Although I’m really happy with the quality, it’s much nicer than I expected and that’s saying a lot— it’s from Free People.   I have decent general knowledge of the color wheel (copious art lessons as a child), but I find myself pairing colors more consciously since I started following Academichic.  I think I started following Academichic in the spring so I’m totally positive how I got to that post from spring 2009 but I’m glad I did, it’s a great reference!

Red and Pink Mixing

Worn on Wednesday 17 Nov 2010

Thoughts:  Happy Thanksgiving (in the U.S. or if you’re out of the U.S. and celebrate)!

So it was really windy last week.  Great look for me, right?  The hair in the face isn’t too much?  No?  (hahahaa)  I wore this for the day and then out for cocktails/charity benefit with my friend.  Who drank about $40 worth of cocktails and then insisted on a trip to Wendy’s before the end of the night.  The chicken nuggets were good, and I had skipped dinner.

I think this is the first time I’ve ever put pink and red together, although the pink is very small.  The old fashion rule book stated that pink and red should not be mixed… and that even red lipstick must be carefully matched to the outfit (this does actually apply in some cases)!  And here I am breaking the rules (a little) with pink in the pattern of my dress.  I admire people who can mix pink and red separates so well, that’s definitely on my list!!

Tomorrow I have a super special post!  Get ready!

Banana Republic long cardigan, Free People dress, LOFT belt, Assets by Sara Blakely tights (Target), Sofft pointed toe pumps.

Light on the Shoulder

11.2.10 – Tuesday – Hello November – Bohemian Equestrian… ish…

So Terra and I are starting a support group for whoever’s not doing 30 for 30.  You’re welcome to join us— but wait, everyone’s doing 30 for 30!  Well if you’re aren’t then you’re welcome to join our (very small) group.  Seriously though, I can’t wait to see everyone’s remixes for the next 29 days!

I… am really behind on posting, I think it was posting out of order for Halloween that got me a little messed up, so I can’t even remember what I did when I was wearing this.  Oh well.  But these are my latest pants purchase!  They’re the LOFT riding pants on super sale right now.  I actually used to ride horses when I was younger and I could totally see myself wearing this on horseback.  On a non-strenuous trail ride or something, although flat boots would definitely be better.  Yes, I am actually that ridiculous.

And this is probably why I’m not doing 30 for 30.  This time.

H&M cardigan sweater thing, Free People shirt, leather ribbon thing from A. C. Moore, LOFT pants, Frye boots.

Your Socks Are Showing

10.24.10 – Sunday – Brunch/Theatre

I posted out of order because of Halloween so now I’m resuming regular, in order of appearance photos!  Last week it was still warm enough to go out with bare legs and I had to take the sweater off eventually because I was too hot.  I guess bare leg weather is over now, it didn’t even break fifty degrees today.  This sweater is really old, maybe five or six years old?  I’m trying to decide to keep it or give it away.  It’s huge, and so heavy that it actually doesn’t stay on.  I think it actually weighs about six pounds and is bigger than a standard pillow when folded up!  I think I wear it about once a year… so it may be time for it to go.

I’ve never really done socks sticking out of shoes before, not even the socks and sandals trend.  I actually have all these tall socks for underneath boots but I hardly ever use them/never pull them up out of boots.  I discovered I like it though, and maybe next time I’ll try it with tights?

P. S. Any thoughts on the blog header?  I’m not really sure that I like it, I can’t seem to get the lettering to stand out without resorting to neon colors, and I honestly feel redundant on the header and then in the photos.  I might change it to a photo without me in it.  What do you think about photo headers?

My Hair Needs A Professional Stylist Every Day

10.18.10 – Monday – Salon

I finally got the ends of my hair cleaned up, I wanted to wait on cutting it until after the formal events for the fall season but that puts me at mid-December for the next cut… not exactly ideal.  But I don’t think I can wait until after the winter holidays, it will probably look very scraggly!

Lately I’ve been… I don’t know what to call it… getting back to my roots?  Wearing a lot of black, lace, really feeling matte sequins.  Okay, so when I started exploring fashion a lot more in high school matte sequins may not have existed… but black, dramatic pieces did and I promise promise promise to scrounge up some photos or at least some of the pieces I still have from that era!  Then you can all see what kind of a crazy I was (am).

Going Grey

9.23.10 ~ Thursday

Ahhh!  Time for a salon visit, you can really really see the grey in the last photo, especially in that one spot!  I’ve had grey hair coming in for about ten years now and have been coloring it for at least that long.  I’d rather dye over the grey than pull it out— eek! bald spots!  I don’t even remember what the last color I used was though, I did it myself with Feria.  But I think I might start heading to the salon again, I’d love to do a double process.  Highlights!  I’m not sure what color though.

P. S. I finally remembered to photograph the back of this dress!  It’s not that interesting, but it’s a little different from the standard dress back.

Free People dress, Charlotte Russe belt, Sofft platforms.
