This is my original black jersey Alexander Wang dress from the F/W 2010 collection. I hugely regret not buying more of this collection. I don’t know what I was thinking. I clearly was not because I’m still trying to track down pieces of that collection.
I actually like this dress better than my other one, but I wear it less. This one always seemed a little bit fancier to me. I love the built-in scarf– so many ways to wear it, and it’s also just fun to play with. This is the first time I’ve worn something over this dress. It turned out much better than I thought it would, so I’ll have to style it again with one of my other black sweater things.

Last Sunday there was a birth in the family, and I expected to be in the delivery room. However, the baby came very suddenly on Sunday morning — the birth was estimated for the afternoon — so I arrived afterwards. And then one of my (so-called) friends informed me that I was man repelling like a champion. That I most emphatically cannot deny.
This baby is going to have way too many crazy aunts.
And I’m pretty sure that everyone in the hospital thought I was a crazy too, considering that I was at New York-Presbyterian/Weil Cornell.

I’m interrupting my usually chronological photos because Lydia’s are already up. And if I post them in order it’ll be next week and I’ll feel like an idiot. Lydia’s write up is much better, and you should look at some of the photos she captured with her wide angle lens!
Last week Lydia came to New York! We did lots of fun and mostly non-touristy things (I put my foot down at Times Square with a tripod on a Friday night. Just. No.).
We went to Central Park because Lydia had never been, and wonder of wonders: I managed not to get us lost. But we didn’t venture any farther uptown than Le Pain Quotidien. Otherwise getting lost would have been a very real possibility because I have no idea where any of those walkways go as soon as they’re past Le Pain.
Then we ventured downtown for some shopping, etc. and then we met Nnenna and ate lots of pho!

Glad I was wearing little wedges for FNO as I walked so much that night. Trying to get a cab was crazy and actually getting anywhere once in the cab was almost impossible. After 6:30pm I took the NQR and walked everywhere.
I feel like I have weird, slightly vacant looking expressions on my face in all the photos I took on Thursday. Probably the change of season making me feel kind of odd. You can actually see my dress this time, unlike last time. I thought I was way too overdressed for FNO… but by 6pm it got cool out so I wrapped a sweater over my dress. It’s Alexander Wang, which I think of as sporty and sort of androgynous, but always ends up looking more cocktail hour on me? Maybe it’s the hair. I planned for down and pin straight but the weather had other plans, became way more humid in the evening and my hair puffed up so I squashed it together and stuck some pins in it.
Want to see photos from the stores during FNO?…

These are actually test shots for a maternity photoshoot that I stood in for to check the light. My friend (of the baby shower) asked me for some artsy black and white photos. So I needed to scout locations for privacy and test the light beforehand. I think I found some lovely options.
I wore black and white because my friend has paler skin than I do and will be wearing black. I wanted as close to possible as that so I could get a more accurate idea of how the contrast will turn out once I black and white the photos. A really good back and white photograph is much more than just applying a filter. Location also matters.
These photos make me realize how much I need my hair cut. The last time I went to the salon was February… I think? I’m definitely going to call for an appointment!
Welcome to Letters from the City, a lifestyle photoblog.
My name is Alex and I have been blogging in some form or another since 1998. I’m a former Manhattanite now living the quieter life in Brooklyn. I like outerwear and red lipstick.
When I was younger, I was let loose in a GAP Kids one too many times, resulting in many of the fashion choices you see here in my photos. I also read, traveled, and took cooking and art classes. Art eventually led me around to photography, and to this day I do enjoy a good brunch.
