There’s nothing like the swishy sound of a silk skirt as a model strides past you on the runway.

As much as I love the expertly produced shows, I’ll be the first to say that it’s not all glitz and glamour during fashion week. Mostly it’s a 12+ hour day rushing around the city, then you edit photos, try to sleep a few hours, and then get back up in the morning and do it all over again.

It’s a lot of work, but I love the thrill right as the lights come up and the first model steps out. It never fails to put a smile on my face.

Spring 2016 is less than three weeks away. To be honest, I’m hoping for a very low-key season. I won’t be able to attend most shows during the day, and I would really love to spend a bit of time seeing friends for longer than three minutes before we have to rush off to our next destinations.

backstage at fashion week

As a whole, your experience at fashion week is much more like the craze of being backstage than sitting front of house.

If you’ll be attending fashion week in New York, I’d love to meet up with you if our schedules allow it. My favorite thing about having this blog has always been the people I’ve met because of it, and I want to make that a priority again.

If you want to see some gorgeous past seasons of presentations and shows (and a few crazed backstage experiences, too), you can browse them all here. My most memorable show of all time still remains Marc Jacobs Spring 2014

Earlier this spring, Milly did a collection for Kohl’s and while I looked, I didn’t order anything when it launched. However, I ended up at a Kohl’s a few months later and picked up this dress on super sale. It was 50 or 60% off, a good find for something from a collaboration.

It’s been so long that this dress is no longer available at Kohl’s. However, it does pop up on eBay fairly frequently.

In retrospect, I do wish I had worn a belt. It’s okay without one, but the waist seam is really visible on me. Even a thin belt would have covered it.

I take a lot of photos because I like to keep them around as memories. However, I never seem to look back through them as often as I think I will (or as often as I would like).

And as my memory gets longer, events tend to blur together. Did that happen a year ago? Three? Five?

…Ten?

Around this time two years ago I was having a bit of a staycation at The Standard. I saw Philip Seymour Hoffman walking his bike and conversing with someone on a West Village street. I wandered through a garden and met a healer. I had a much more experimental photographic style.

I had forgotten all these things until now.

What did you do last summer? Two summers ago? Ten?

Also: wow, my hair used to be crazy.

Dressed up summer shorts outfit: blue lace blouse, j.crew sunflower necklace, relaxed fit shorts

I don’t wear shorts very often because I feel like they de-age me by about ten years, which is something that I’m actually trying to avoid. Anyone else have the problem of appearing too young? Generally I think it’s most problematic in the workplace (clients don’t take you seriously, you can have difficulty establishing authority, etc.), but it can just be a problem, period. I’ve even had cashiers in stores ask me if I wanted to use my mother’s rewards account for purchases. Oy.

So. I don’t wear shorts too often. But when I do, I wear them with a slightly dressier top, a nice necklace, and I try to avoid flip flops (unless I’m headed for the beach). This formula works out well for me, and on cool nights I like to add a blazer instead of a sweater. A blazer looks a little bit more grown up on me than a cardigan does.

Wearing:

  • Banana Republic blouse [past season by at least four seasons]
  • Not sure where the shorts came from — the tag has come off
  • J.Crew sunflower necklace [old, but it was a popular style so some are probably floating around on eBay]
  • Cole Haan Air Tali [on super sale at Nordstrom]
  • LV Neverfull MM [found a few on Tradesy]

A breezy, beachy weekend filled with food and sand. I always appreciate time to travel and spend outdoors during the summer. Only thing you have to worry about is the sunburn. I’m out of my favorite Neutrogena Dry-Touch, but a while ago I got a sample of Supergoop’s mineral sunscreen in a gift bag and it worked well for me.

I had a serious red, white and blue theme going on… so much that during the day I even wore pink lipstick instead of my usual red. For a lot of occasions I do like pink more than red during the summer. Pink always seems more fresh and modern to me on a hot summer day.

Hope you enjoy all of my photos!

five summer beauty favorites

I hope your summer is off to a fantastic start! June feels like spring to me any more, so I usually don’t start to feel like it’s actually summer until July. I always switch up my beauty products a bit when full summer is upon us. I always know it’s here when my hair grows to twice its size and I start going through five oil blotting sheets before the end of each day.

I’m a big believer in sticking with products that work for you, but this summer I’ve found a few new things to mix with my usual standbys. From left to right:

1. Physicians Formula Organic Wear 100% Natural Origin CC Cream [$8.99 at Amazon]

I picked up this CC cream on a whim at the drug store and have really been pleased with it. It has medium coverage and doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin. It does have a slightly dewy finish, so I always use it with setting powder and a bit of bronzer.

The next two products were surprise hits for me. Both are from the gift bag from NewBeauty Magazine‘s 10th Anniversary. I really like the NewBeauty YouTube channel.

2. MACADAMIA PROFESSIONAL Nourishing Moisture Masque [$36 at Ulta]

The last hair mask I had was about five years ago, and my ends have been terribly dry lately. I’m not sure that this has actually improved the overall dryness of my hair all that much, but my hair does look smoother the day after I use it. You’re supposed to work it through your hair from roots to ends, but I usually just condition the ends or else my roots look oily.

3. Whish Body Butter in Acai Grapefruit [$24 at Birchbox and Ulta]

This Acai Grapefruit scent reminds me a lot of the old Shisedo grapefruit-scented lotion. I loved the light, fruity scent of that one and I’m actually not sure if they’re still making it any more. I do only use the Whish Body Butter when I know I won’t be outside for a while. I get attacked by bugs during the summer and mosquito bites always take forever to go away.

4. Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Red Dahlia [$5.99 at Amazon]

I’ve been using Burt’s Bees Tinted Lip Balm as a replacement for Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment. The Fresh lip balm is one of my favorite products ever, but it’s $22.50 now at Sephora and I started to think that it was just too expensive for a tinted lip balm. I’ve had many different colors of the Burt’s Bees balm, but I always come back to Red Dahlia, which is a sheer red. If you’re looking for a pink, Hibiscus is my second favorite color.

5. Benefit They’re Real [$24 at Sephora and Ulta]

This is more of an all-year favorite than a summer favorite, although it’s great during the summer. I have trouble with waterproof mascaras irritating my eyes, and They’re Real is one of the only mascaras that doesn’t smudge or flake on me with all-day wear. It never melts off when it’s humid, either. I try new mascaras a lot, but I always end up coming back to They’re Real.

Do you have a list of favorites yet for summer? I’m sure I’ll be adding a few (forgot a sunscreen!) but for now these are my picks for this summer.

I’m not usually one to make fancy breakfasts, but I’ve been making an effort to eat healthily this spring. There was a time last year in which I pretty much ate coffee shop breakfast, Seamless lunch, Seamless dinner… repeat. I had strings of days when I did this. Maybe even weeks.

It was bad. I’m trying to go for better choices these days.

One morning I got up and was inspired to make Blogliates Banana Pancakes [video here]. All you need is two eggs, a banana and some coconut oil or butter. My recipe ended up having an additional ingredient, so it was really Blogilates Banana Pancakes with a twist.

one banana, two eggs, coconut oil - ingredients for blogilates gluten free dairy free pancakes

I mashed the banana, then mixed in the eggs. The eggs I used must have been size extra extra large, because my batter came out too runny. Luckily I had some overnight oats on hand (I make mine with about 1/2 cup gluten-free oatmeal, 3/4 cup vanilla almond milk and a dash of cinnamon). I mixed 1 cup of overnight oats into my pancake batter, which then thickened enough to hold its shape on the griddle.

cooking gluten free dairy free pancakes

Cooking the pancakes on medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes on each side was perfect. They were done very quickly and it’s easy to burn them (or very dark brown them), so I checked the bottoms frequently.

blogilates gluten free dairy free pancakes

I dusted my pancakes with cinnamon and garnished with some orange slices. Don’t they look delicious? But even with the oats, the pancakes turned out a lot sweeter than I expected. I’m not sure if I would make these again. The recipe is great for someone who really likes sweet food, but I’d want to modify it. A higher proportion of overnight oats made with unsweetened almond milk might be better for me.

Have you ever tried a pancake recipe like this one? If yours turned out great, let me know what you did!
