FBFF: Blogger Wearing Habits

The Fashion/Beauty Friend Friday bloggers are talking about frequency of wearing clothing items, and this week it’s back to our traditional questions. Jump to ModlyChic to read our thoughts on budgeting versus impulse buying, one-time wears, and whether or not seeing remixed items holds your interest.

1. Are you a one-time wearer?
Definitely not. Even my cocktail dresses get occasional wear for absolutely no reason other than I feel like wearing them. If I spend for a dress I’ll regret not wearing it much more than not keeping it pristine.

2. Do you feel the need to purchase something new for an evening out or a special event?
I used to purchase new things frequently when I was younger and didn’t have many things for evening. Now I have enough things to cover formal dinners to black tie weddings, so I can’t see myself actually needing to purchase anything. I love the dresses I have, and I love to wear them. However, I won’t feel bad if I do have to purchase something new. Honestly, I’m twenty four, and my body is just not the same as it was when I was eighteen or twenty, or even twenty two. Not everything still works.

3. Re-mixing is something a lot of bloggers are proud of being able to accomplish – are you a re-mixing pro or do you shy away from posting items frequently? Why?
Some items get a lot of remix time, like my Francesca’s Collections Cardigan. It gets worn constantly, as do my Alexander Wang dresses. I wouldn’t say I’m proud of it– it’s just practicality. I tend to buy fewer, higher priced pieces and have less to choose from than a lot of other bloggers.

I do admit that I have pieces are not remixed frequently. Sometimes it’s because they’re too seasonal, or too distinctive… or they have to be dry cleaned. I wear things that need to be dry cleaned far less often than my other things. The chemical smell of dry cleaned clothing really bothers me.

4. Do you have a clothing budget or are you an impulse buyer?
I try to have a clothing budget, but it doesn’t always work out. I imagine it’s the same way for a lot of people. Luckily, I am not an impulse buyer. Anything priced higher than $20 is usually debated for at least a week. I’ve stewed over handbag and coat purchases for more than six months before actually making a purchase, and I even waited a week before buying my Merona ostrich bag (Target, $29.99).

5. Do you find yourself bored when reading a blog in which clothing items are often remixed and appear frequently?
No, never. Although I always feel like I’m boring everyone when I wear pieces frequently. I do remix pieces a lot more frequently than many of the other style blogs on the web. Two of the best remixers (in my opinion, and also two of my favorite blogs to read) are Fashion Toast and The Clothes Horse. I know, totally different blogs, right? But Fashion Toast is one of the first style blogs I ever followed (and I still love it), and The Clothes Horse is such an amazing remixer that I’m usually like what? no way, that’s the dress from ________, too?

1. What are the tools you use to blog?

My 15in MacBook Pro. I like it so much more than my old 13in MacBook because the screen is bigger and much much clearer. I also love my iPhone 4S for the camera (and apps like HootSuite and Instagram), along with my SLR, tripod, and remote for serious photos. I really love technology. I’ve actually been blogging and doing web development since I was eleven, so that’s almost fourteen years now.

2. What technology item is on your wish-list?

iPad 3! I borrowed an iPad 2 for IFB and it was a lifesaver. The wireless network worked on it while my phone was basically a useless piece of expensive technology. I’m sure it must be amazing with 3G (or the rumored 4G) if it’s not on AT&T in New York.

3. Through the barrage of posts, tweets, pics, poses, messages, etc… how do you avoid becoming a slave to the constant infiltration of information?

I adore Twitter, but half the time it’s just like scroll, scroll, scroll, scroll. I hardly ever check my phone at work (and yes, I get anxiety about that) so I am semi-unplugged for a good number of hours during the week.

I can never decide if I spend too much time or too little blogging. I’m inclined to think too little, actually. I never seem to have enough time for my blog and reading blogs.

FBFF: Halloween Inspiration

A festive outfit from sometime close to Halloween last year.

1. Do you have plans for Halloween? What will you dress up as this year?

I have a going away party on the 29th and we’re requiring everyone attend in costume. Otherwise I haven’t made any definite plans. One night I’m planning on a flapper costume, but I’m thinking about making a witch costume as well. Saw the cutest witch hat fascinators on Etsy!

2. Where do you go for costume and makeup inspiration?

Google, of course! Last year I went as a gypsy and a dark fairy. I’ve never done elaborate makeup for Halloween, but I think I should get into it. If nothing else I could get some cool false eyelashes!

3. What was the best costume you’ve ever donned?

One year my great aunt (the family seamstress) made me a Morticia Addams costume. I wish I could find a photo. It was black and sparkly and ridiculously fabulous. Every girl wants to grow up to be Morticia Addams, right? No, that was just me?

4. What’s the most creative costume you’ve ever seen?

My friend’s parents once were a butterfly and a butterfly catcher. Totally cute.

5. No holds barred if you could dress up as anything, what would it be?

Bellatrix Lestrange, and I’d want a really really good costume. It would be awesome because I’d actually be scary. I’m waiting on growing my hair out, so maybe next year.

Presents from StrandedBlogger

Quick post before I’m out and about for the day! Last night I went to StrandedBlogger, a post-conference meetup organized by Modly Chic. It was awesome meeting Katy in person for the first time! And because Katy is totally the best, she even got us gift bags.

strandedblogger gift bag
A free drink voucher for the Top of the Strand, which has really a nice view uptown.

It was fun meeting people face-to-face (and not on Skype)! I also met Star-Crossed Smile in person for the first time for a pre-meetup meetup and we shared a cab uptown. We were lucky to get one, it can definitely be next to impossible in the rain.

Tweet me (@alexshook) if you’re going to FNO tonight! My only definite stop is DKNY and it’s definitely going to be crazy, but I hope to cross paths with people I met last night!

Five Fall Favorites for FBFF

I love the long summer days but it’s no secret that the cooler, crisp autumn air calls to my heart. There wasn’t much of a spring this year so I’m really hoping for at least two months of fall. I’m not even sure if I wore any of my more transitional pieces yet this year! I’m looking forward to mixing them with the five following trends for fall:

1. Animal prints! I have some already, but I just bought this leopard blouse.

2. Orange… still working on this one.

leather skirt

3. Leather. I’ve got the skirt…but the dress remains elusive. I wouldn’t buy it full price (might not say no to 60% off though) but the movement of this Helmut Lang dress is completely wonderful.

4. Red pants, also working on these. Tried a bunch already but probably $100+ in tailoring required :( Must remember to drop in at… Zara?

5. I have a legacy fur that I’d like to wear more than once during F/W 2011. It definitely has to wait for full winter though, it’s a very heavy coat.

A Close Look at a Favorite Skirt

This is another Visual FBFF from Fashion Beauty Friend Friday. This week it’s hosted by Ashley Getting Dressed and we’re taking a close look at a favorite clothing item. This is one of my favorite skirts, the label is TINY and it’s from Anthropologie. It’s a fairly current from Spring 2011 although it’s no longer available.

The yellow embroidery is my favorite part, followed by the smooth and floaty cotton voile. I also like the gathered panel centered on the waistband. I hung it in a tree to photograph it because I felt like that was something Anthropologie-y to do. A tree that it had rained on earlier. Not my brightest idea, I admit, but the skirt came out fine.

Have a good weekend, friends! If you’re going to be hit by the hurricane then stay safe and don’t go swimming– I did once two days before being evacuated and spent an hour being pulled out into the middle of the ocean. I’m planning on charging all my electronic devices, turning on HBO, and hiding under a blanket.

My favorite outfit with this skirt is from June 5th, 2011. I’m up so late doing this post that it’s past midnight, so I guess I’ll be heading over to Ashley Getting Dressed to post it now!

The House in the Woods (+FBFF)

16 August 2011

This is what happens when I try to get creative with my poses. Awkward. I’m really terrible at twirl photos, and this is the best one I have.

Light on the accessories. I’m wearing my grandmother’s vintage engagement ring and wedding band. They’re a little small for my right hand, but I think they go well with a ring passed to me from a friend’s grandmother (costume jewelry, I would never take anything meaningful).

I’ve recently become obsessed with this sweater again. I used to love it when I was younger… I think I’ve had it since I was sixteen. I spent most of the day applying for jobs, which is really coincidental with this week’s FBFF questions: dream jobs!

1. Fess up – if you could do anything professionally what would it be? Personal shopper! Or professional gift buyer.

2. What draws you to this? I like helping people select clothing that fits and that they actually want to wear. I want to make people feel good about themselves. My friends have been requesting my services since about the 8th grade and they still call me to say I need this, take me shopping!

3. When did you first start dreaming about this ideal? Ehhh… recently? Last December, when I decided to stop searching for jobs in politics and international affairs (what my degree is in) because after a year it led to nothing and was making me sad. So instead I started interning for a jewelry company in New York.

4. What’s holding you back from going all in? Truthfully, I don’t know that it would still be something I would want to do if it was an actual full time job. And running your own business is hard, I’d rather work for a company because I’d have more exposure to the fashion world and I think I’d have more opportunities to meet people as well. But perhaps I’ll revisit the idea in ten years or so.

5. Sometimes the first step is the hardest… what’s one step you can take now on the way to realizing your dream? I’m applying for jobs in fashion right now, specifically in PR, marketing, and social media. If you know of any openings send them my way!
