Polka Dots + Fall Weekend

Vintage-inspired fall fashion

Dear Kimberlee,

We might be firmly entrenched in fall, but all that means is I’m holding onto bare legs and no jackets all the harder. Doing no tights until November is practically a point of pride now that I’ve been doing it for the past three years. So far it’s been mild, so maybe I’ll even do no tights until December again!

I feel like I wear sunglasses in photos a lot. Probably too much. I omitted them on this partly cloudy day.

And then the sun came out and hit me in the eyes. And I did not put my sunglasses on because I am stubborn.

The Way We See It

onesightnyc

Did you know that more than 500 million people in the world do not have access to vision care, and many people are not even aware that vision correction is possible?

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to hear Dr. Jason Singh (Executive Director of OneSight) speak at the launch party for their global The Way We See It campaign. OneSight is a non-profit that works both in the U.S. and abroad to eradicate the global vision care crisis. OneSight provides permanent care to every person they help. Additionally, OneSight works to make their mission sustainable: main goals of every OneSight vision center are to be financially stable and to foster social change.

OneSight is working with schools here in New York to bring vision care to students. For children, about 80% of learning is visual, which makes clear vision a necessity. New York no longer does vision screening (which is how my poor eyesight was caught during elementary school), so OneSight’s work in New York is a badly needed service.

OneSight’s The Way We See It is a campaign to raise awareness of the vision care crisis. So now you know. Visit thewaywesee.it to experience life without corrected vision and spread the world.

If you happen to be in the Meatpacking District today (10/24/14), RayBan is donating $10 to the OneSight NYC Vision Center School Program for every person who contributes to their street art installation in the Gansevoort Plaza. If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by and let your artistic side out!

Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Collection Review

Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Skincare Collection

These products were provided to me by Neutrogrena. #gotitfree

As I get older, I’ve noticed my skin tending towards dry and sensitive. Neutrogena products work well for me (the sunscreens are my favorite!) as they don’t irritate my skin or cause breakouts. I received these full-size samples of Neutrogena’s Rapid Wrinkle Repair line and have been using them diligently since I got them during the summer. I can honestly say that they are the best drugstore skincare products I have ever used. In fact, I like the serum so much that when I ran out of it I went out and got two more tubes.

In the summer I always end up getting closed comedones, which are those non-inflammatory small bump type of acne that make your skin texture appear rough and uneven. A good treatment is retinol, although most products with retinol are too strong and irritate my skin. The Rapid Wrinkle Repair collection is marketed as anti-aging but the improvement I noted most was on my blemished summer skin. I will say that I think my skin texture looked worse before it looked better, but that’s always been my personal experience with retinol products. My skin improved rapidly once it adjusted.

Left to right: serum, eye cream, daytime moisturizer.

The full collection includes a retinol moisturizer for daytime and moisturizer for nighttime, but my two favorite products are the eye cream and serum. You can pick up the Rapid Wrinkle Repair line at most drugstores, but they tend to be priced lower online, especially at Target and drugstore.com.

How to Wear A Summer Maxi Dress for Fall

How to wear a light summer maxi dress during fall | summer to fall transition outfit

Dear Shanondoah,

I don’t know about you, but I’m still holding on to some of my summer dresses. October? What? When did that happen? Luckily we’ve been having good fall weather. Most days I go out with a jacket but don’t actually wear it, which means I can definitely still get away with a chiffon maxi dress. Not all of my summer dresses are suitable for early fall, but this one has a season-neutral print in darker colors. Not so difficult to transition with a loose, dark sweater and burgundy bag.

My eyes are definitely only half-open in every photo. Sometimes you just have those weeks that completely wipe you out. Next time I’ll put on my matching red sunglasses.

I love that this dress is split in the front. Makes taking long strides and walking up stairs a total breeze! Hope you have something fun planned for the weekend. I’m planning on sleeping in :)

Karolyn Pho Fall 2014 Backstage

A model having her makeup done at Karolyn Pho Fall 2014.

The Spring 2015 collections were great (plum lips! creative braids!) but fall is in the air here, so I’m sharing one of my favorite Fall 2014 beauty trends. Metallic shadow with emphasis on the lower lash line was popular on the runway, although I would definitely want some Skyn Iceland Eye Gels on hand. I got a few samples at a party earlier this year and absolutely love them. They can be worn even if you’re wearing foundation.

I also like Fall 2014’s clean, no makeup look. Keeping the skin simple always looks great. I’m not planning on giving up my red lipstick, but I’d like to incorporate a neutral lipstick, too. Just need to find the right one for my skin tone!

Fall Weekend + Shopping My Current Closet

Wearing a Military inspired jacket and blue leather dress to brunch

Dear Brenna,

Over the weekend I met Kim (she took this photo) for an awesome brunch. Of course, I wore a blue leather dress. This is a favorite one I got last fall at Reiss and is a true A-line, a less common shape for leather these days. I can’t wear it in the summer (too hot!), so I’m making sure it goes into regular rotation this fall. However, I don’t love the ankle boots with the rest of the outfit here. They’re not in style any more, but I can really picture gold glitter ankle boots with this dress and jacket.

Lately I’ve been going through a lot of my old things, in particular the clothing I’ve stored away. I’ve decided that this season, instead of purchasing new clothing I’m going to begin wearing all of my current pieces. Everything. Including the evening dresses. Adding the evening dresses will be a good challenge as I don’t normally wear them outside of formal events. I generally don’t believe in saving clothing for an occasion: I could outgrow it or the style could fade, and then I would be sad. I’d rather have worn the dress than not, you know?

…We’ll see where this experiment leads— likely to increased dry cleaning bills. And more shoes. I am not restricting purchases of shoes and to an extent, accessories. Shoes wear out so quickly in New York. I have mine redone with Vibram soles because I dislike having to replace things I love, but after a while there’s just no saving some of them. And also, I did a bit of thrifting and found a few good things (shoes) for fall. I’m into tall boots (and 1995) again, so those will definitely be happening this season.

Have you made any interesting new decisions this fall? I feel like I just made a clothing resolution along the lines of a New Year’s resolution.

Last of Summer Chambray

Wearing an eShakti vintage inspired chambray dress with Felix Rey belt and gold open toe shoes

Dear Chrissy,

This is the first and last time this season you’ll be seeing this chambray dress. I ordered it from eShakti in the spring. It’s served me well through early fall, but I personally feel that this particular chambray is too lightweight for winter. I don’t think it would be a great choice to wear with tights (the dress would stick to them) although it would work with a blazer and a fun scarf in a warmer climate.
