Dear Katha,
Lately it’s been scorching hot stateside, though luckily there have been one or two occasional cool days. Without those I might turn into a blob of goo for the summer and not reform until October and our lovely fall season returns.
I’ve been trying to go lighter lately, so I’ve been taking just a small bag (or what passes for small for me) with the bare minimum of things I need. …

It’s been a long time since I’ve had fresh-picked strawberries or eggs straight from the farm. Hope you’re having a beautiful day!

Dear Shen Dove,
I picked this Tracy Negoshian dress up downtown at Aquamarine at 114. It has a doozy of a pattern. Next time I need to take a head-to-toe photo and show you. …

Dear Mia,
You may (of course) recognize this photo as one lately from Instagram that’s been put through the A Beautiful Mess app. Among the great benefits of the coast are the sunsets… and the storm clouds to keep them interesting. This one is straight out of the Camera+ app. The ability to set exposure is such an important part of iPhoneography for me. Keep reading for more (non-Instagrammed) photos from my weekend! …

Dear Lydia,
I go for color much more during the summer than any other time of year. Lately I’ve also been picking up geometric patterns. After seeing some fantastic Suno dresses earlier in the season I guess I just have prints on my mind.
This dress is a lot different than anything I have right now and not typical of anything I would usually wear in both its pattern and shape. I’m enjoying wearing it, though. Next time I think I’ll try it with accessories that have more of a tropical feel. …

Dear Nnenna,
My favorite way to style my hair during the hot and humid months is in slightly messy, beachy-looking waves. My curly hair is really a blessing because it’s fun to style and has good volume. However, during the summer that can definitely work against me. All that humidity is definitely frizz-inducing. Not a good thing, especially because I need my hair cut. It’s been since last September!
I’ve tried tons of hair products from really expensive to really inexpensive. My favorite summer hair products are both from Bumble and bumble, which tends to be on the more expensive side. I don’t mind the price, though. They last a long time and actually work, unlinke some other expensive products I’ve used.

Dear Silvergirl,
A few weeks ago Bare Escentuals was doing free makeovers in Madison Square Park… and of course I instagrammed some photos between product applications. I ended up purchasing bareMinerals READY Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 20 in Fairly Light N10 ($29), one of the products that was used on me.
I also bought the Retractable Precision Face Brush ($22), which is fantastically soft and the best powder foundation brush I’ve ever owned. The brush is totally amazing, but I don’t really love the READY Foundation. …

Dear Dotty,
McNulty’s Tea & Coffe Co. is my favorite tea shop in New York. They have all kinds of specialty teas like Dragon Fruit with Roses, which sounds like the official tea of Game of Thrones.
I don’t frequent the shop too often because it’s far too easy to spend a fortune there in under ten minutes. The strawberry rose green tea pictured above will set you back $40/pound. Not that you would need to purchase an entire pound all at once. You could easily drink that much over the course of a year, but it wouldn’t be as fresh after a few months. I tend to buy loose leaf tea in quarter-pound bags. …

Dear Kelsey,
Despite the freezing spring, we’ve had quite a few scorchers already. You can usually tell how hot it is by the size of my hair, which is out of control. I tried a new hair product that actually gave me really nice, defined curls… right up until I went out for the day. Keratin and a cut are in my future. …
Welcome to Letters from the City, a lifestyle photoblog.
My name is Alex and I have been blogging in some form or another since 1998. I’m a former Manhattanite now living the quieter life in Brooklyn. I like outerwear and red lipstick.
When I was younger, I was let loose in a GAP Kids one too many times, resulting in many of the fashion choices you see here in my photos. I also read, traveled, and took cooking and art classes. Art eventually led me around to photography, and to this day I do enjoy a good brunch.
Thank you for visiting! I hope you'll stay a while and get to know me. Learn More →
